The renowned Acura NSX world-class sports car returns for the 1999 model year, continuing to set performance and handling achievements.
To ensure the ultimate in acceleration, braking and cornering for the world's first all-aluminum production car, a midengine design was chosen for ideal weight distribution and balance. By utilizing high-strength aluminum alloys and special construction techniques unique to the NSX, a unit-body structure was created that is significantly stronger than steel, yet 40 percent lighter.
The NSX also features a forged, all-aluminum, independent double-wishbone suspension with gas-filled dampers and large antiroll bars to help it achieve razor-sharp handling. Further, its exclusive electric variable-power-assisted steering perfectly communicates the driver's every command while providing instantaneous feedback.
To satisfy the most demanding drivers, the 1999 NSX offers two distinct powertrains. The first is a lightweight, all-aluminum 3.2-liter, DOHC, 24 valve, 90-degree V-6 engine yielding 290 horsepower and 224 lb ft of torque, coupled to a 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission. The optional NSX powerplant is a 3.0-liter V-6 engine that provides 252 horsepower and 210 lb ft of torque mated to a four-speed automatic transmission featuring the Formula One racing-inspited sequential SportShift semi-manual system.
Both NSX engines are equipped with Acura's patented Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system, an ingenious Variable Volume Induction System, direct ignition and the computerized PGM-FI fuel injection system pioneered in Formula One racing.
To harness the NSX's robust performance, its braking system includes ventilated four-wheel discs with an exclusive 4-channel Antilock Braking System (ABS). An advanced Traction Control System (TCS) with sophisticated control logic helps make the Acura NSX one of the most stable high-performance cars ever built. The system works in conjunction with the ABS speed sensors and a g-sensor to detect rotational differences between front and rear wheels and other critical vehicle conditions for maximum TCS effectiveness.
The forged-aluminum alloy wheels of the NSX were designed to improve performance by reducing unsprung weight, yet are significantly stronger than a cast of aluminum wheel. Specially designed, low-aspect-ratio tires ensure a large footprint on the road to provide more responsive handling and maximized cornering capability.
Nestled inside this exotic sports car in the ergonomically designed, leather-trimmed power seats, the driver and passenger are surrounded by creature comforts including an automatic climate-control system, the Acura/Bose® Music System, power windows and door locks, cruise conrrol and a tilt/telescopic steering column.
Available as an open top model, the NSX-T comes with a removable top, which is formed from aluminum for light weight and durability and has its own storage compartment under the rear glass hatch. In addition, the vehicle's security system is cleverly designed to help ward off intruders even with the top removed. An antitheft vehicle immobilizer system also disables the vehicle in the event of tampering.
Like any true limited-production, exotic sports car, the NSX is painstakingly handcrafted. Built at a special manufacturing facility in Japan where the vehicles are moved individually from one work station to the next, less than 500 NSXs will be imported to the US for the 1999 model year.
