OVERVIEW
The 2004 Acura TL represents the third generation of Acura's near-luxury sedan entry, which was introduced in 1995 and featured a second-generation TL in 1999. Enthusiast drivers appreciate the previous-generation TL for its high dynamic capabilities-it is a true driver's car that competes against the best near-luxury sedans. These enthusiasts are increasingly looking for more dynamic refinement and capability, and emotional styling. With the 2004 TL, Acura set out to create an all-new vehicle with an exterior design that is more taut, athletic and powerful than before.

For inspiration they considered a design style referred to as "Bauhaus," named for the famous German design house of the 1920s that defined "form follows function" design. The TL uses crisp, taut lines instead of sweeping curves, satin trim in key areas rather than bright chrome, and a driver-oriented layout makes driving more engaging.

MARKET SUMMARY
The luxury vehicle market continues to expand, and the "near luxury" and "luxury SUV" segments within it are enjoying the most growth. The new 2004 Acura TL occupies the near luxury segment, which accounts for over a third of the luxury market as a whole. Although the TL has been a top seller in this segment, it has recently faced increasing challenges from sporty sedans such as the BMW 530i, Cadillac CTS and Infiniti G35. Competition also comes from compact near-luxury sedans like the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-class.

POWERTRAIN
The TL's 3.2-liter VTEC V-6 builds on the technology of the TL Type-S engine that preceded it, and incorporates many refinements and improvements. The 2004 TL uses a new aluminum-alloy cylinder block and heads, and a new crankshaft and pistons. Combining a 3-rocker VTEC system with a high 11.0:1 compression ratio and high-flow intake and exhaust systems help the engine produce 270 hp (10 hp more than the 2003 TL Type-S). It also delivers more torque than the previous TL Type-S engine from 1800 rpm to redline, with 238 lbs-ft maximum torque delivered at 5000 rpm.

The engine meets the tough California Air Resources Board (CARB) LEV-2 ULEV emissions standards for all vehicles sold in the U.S., and has a tune-up interval of 105,000 miles. A new Maintenance Minder system continuously monitors the vehicle's operating conditions, indicating to the driver when maintenance such as an oil change is required.

Both a 5-speed Sequential SportShift™ automatic and a close ratio 6-speed manual transmission are available.

BODY & CHASSIS
The design concept starts by building the body over a substantial foundation-large wheels and tires positioned wide, with body overhangs minimized.

Front suspension geometry evolved from the previous TL Type-S in pursuit of even greater roadholding capabilities. Every suspension link has been revised to optimize the geometry to produce improved ride and handling. Using a new lower arm, and knuckle, and shortening the rigid stamped steel upper arms, results in greater camber gain, resulting in optimized tire contact patches during cornering. Both the front and rear suspension have built in "toe" gain when the suspension is in bump, further stabilizing the chassis on rough roads and during cornering. With careful suspension tuning, engineers made sure that enhanced handling performance did not come at the cost of ride quality or comfort.

Double-wishbone front suspension and 5-link double wishbone rear suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) are all standard. Wider wheels and tires are standard, and a choice of all-season or high-performance tires is available on the manual transmission models. The result is that the new TL outperforms the previous TL Type-S in ride, handling and braking performance.

Despite a comprehensive array of new technologies and the added use of insulating materials to promote an even quieter and more luxurious cabin, strict control over component weight has kept the new TL to just 3,575 pounds, only 17 pounds more than the 2003 TL Type-S. And at 3,482 pounds, the 6-speed model actually weighs 76 pounds less. The features and equipment contain a number of firsts for the industry and for Acura. It is the first vehicle in North America to feature an acoustic glass windshield with shade band and the first to offer a standard DVD-Audio 5.1 surround sound system.

INTERIOR
Acura's tradition of augmenting a driver-oriented layout with luxury features evolves in the new TL. LED backlit analog instruments are placed to allow the driver instant access to information, while upgraded interior materials and details enhance luxury. The interior is also more spacious and stylish, and features standard perforated leather-trimmed seating.

The electronics reach a new level of excellence as well. Included is a new available Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™ with seven million points of interest for the 48 states. Its trip calculation time is two times quicker than the previous TL system and it recognizes 293 verbal commands. It also offers a large, easy-to-read 8-inch multi-function touch screen display.

Another advance is the use of Bluetooth, a wireless technology that's attaining widespread use in computers, PDAs and other portable electronics to enable hands-free phone capability in the TL. The Acura HandsFreeLink™ telephone system wirelessly links to the TL owner's Bluetooth-compatible cellular phone to enable calls to be made and received through the TL's audio and voice recognition systems.

The TL features the first automotive application of a standard DVD-A 5.1 audio system in North America. The 225-watt Acura/ELS® Premium 8-speaker Surround Sound System with DVD-Audio, DTS™ and CD 6-disc Changer, AM/FM Tuner and Dolby® Cassette delivers a whole new level of audio fidelity. This DVD-Audio system, developed with Grammy-winning music producer Elliot Scheiner, utilizes six distinct channels (compared with two on the typical premium sound system) to deliver sound resolution 500 times better than CD. The premium system plays standard CDs, DVD-A discs, and DTS-enabled CDs and incorporates XM® Satellite Radio for over 100 channels of premium quality sound

SAFETY
The 2004 TL has an advanced array of safety features. This includes advanced passive safety technologies and engineered-in accident avoidance capabilities like 4-wheel independent suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes, large P235/45R17 tires, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA).

In the event of a collision, the new TL unit body is engineered to disperse collision forces while maintaining the integrity of the passenger compartment. Front and rear door beams (two in the front, one in the rear), extensive use of lightweight, high-strength steel in the passenger safety cage, and deformable front and rear structures, help the TL target the highest rankings in the government SINCAP and NCAP barrier tests. Likewise, during the IIHS offset collision the TL is expected to achieve a "GOOD" rating (the highest) in all categories. Other new safety features for 2004 include standard side curtain airbags and adjustable rear outboard head restraints.

    2004 Acura TL - Powertrain | Part 1

    OVERVIEW

    The TL is powered by an aluminum-alloy 3.2-liter V-6 that uses advanced Acura technology to provide an exceptionally high level of power and refinement. The new VTEC V-6 generates 270 horsepower and 238 lbs-ft of torque-far outpacing the previous generation 3.2 TL (225 horsepower and 216 lbs-ft), and even the 3.2 TL Type-S (260 horsepower and 232 lbs-ft). Compared to the previous generation TL and TL Type-S, the new TL engine delivers identical EPA estimated city and highway mileage* when paired with the Sequential SportShift automatic transmission. In terms of emissions performance, however, it meets CARB LEV-2 ULEV requirements, a much tougher standard than either of its predecessors.

    For the first time ever, the TL offers an available 6-speed manual transmission at no extra cost. With short shift throws, closely spaced ratios and slightly shorter (higher numerically) overall gearing, the 6-speed manual transmission is targeted at drivers interested in extracting the maximum performance-and hands-on fun-out of the most powerful V-6 engine in the class. A helical gear-type limited-slip differential is applied as standard equipment in the 6-speed manual transaxle, providing maximum grip and handling stability under heavy acceleration.

    ENGINE ARCHITECTURE
    The TL 3.2-liter VTEC V-6 builds on the technology of the 3.2 TL Type-S engine that preceded it, and incorporates many refinements and improvements. This 24-valve, 3.2-liter V-6 features aluminum-alloy construction and has a compact, smooth firing 60-degree V-angle. A cold-air induction system coupled with Acura's sophisticated dual-stage intake manifold, 3-rocker VTEC system, increased compression ratio, new close-coupled catalytic converters and high flow exhaust delivers the highest horsepower in its class, combined with exceptional smoothness and extremely low emissions.

    ENGINE BLOCK
    The new lightweight die-cast aluminum-alloy block has cast-in place iron cylinder liners. These thin-wall liners are made using a centrifugal spin casting process that ensures high strength and low porosity. With rough outer surfaces, these liners bond securely to the surrounding aluminum, enhancing liner-to-block rigidity and heat transfer. For rigid crankshaft support and minimized noise and vibration, the block incorporates a deep-skirt design with four bolts per bearing cap. The block assembly is also heat-treated for greater strength.

    CRANKSHAFT/ PISTONS/CONNECTING RODS
    The new crankshaft is based on that of the TL Type-S. The counterweights have been adjusted to accommodate the new, slightly heavier high compression pistons. With taller, reinforced crowns, these new pistons reduce the squish volume (the mixture trapped between the pistons and the cylinder head) and raise the compression ratio (relative to the Type-S) from 10.5:1 to 11.0:1. The forged steel connecting rods carry over from the Type-S.

    CYLINDER HEADS / VALVES
    New cylinder heads are an important factor in improving power and emissions performance. A key feature of the cylinder heads is the integrated exhaust manifold that is part of the cylinder head casting. Made of pressure-cast, low-porosity aluminum, the heads help keep overall engine weight down. Each cylinder head feeds directly into a close-coupled catalyst. To ensure positive sealing, the TL applies a three-layer type head gasket like that of the MDX sport-utility vehicle and NSX. A single Aramid-fiber reinforced belt drives the overhead camshafts.

    VTEC™ (VARIABLE TIMING & LIFT ELECTRONIC CONTROL)
    Acura VTEC™ (Variable Timing and Lift Electronic Control) gives the TL engine strong low speed torque and response coupled with class-leading high rpm horsepower. The TL VTEC system has two distinct modes of operation for the engine's 12 intake valves. At low speeds, the intake valves have low lift and are open a comparatively short period of time during cylinder filling. At high rpm where breathing is critical, the valves switch to high-lift, long duration mode to deliver the best volumetric efficiency possible. The VTEC changeover point occurs at 4700 rpm, and takes just 0.1 second; it's undetectable to the driver.

    In the new TL, the VTEC system continues to be the 3-rocker type, which allows each of a given cylinder's intake valves to be controlled by its own low-speed cam lobe. (By comparison, with 2-rocker VTEC, both intake valves in a given cylinder are controlled by a single low-speed cam lobe). With different low-speed cam profiles for each intake valve, 3-rocker VTEC allows for staggered valve opening and lift. This promotes swirl in the combustion chambers, which improves efficiency. With better mixing in the cylinders, burn speed and combustion stability are improved. When engine rpm reaches 4700 rpm, the powertrain control module (PCM) triggers the opening of an electric spool valve that routes pressurized oil to small pistons in the intake valve rocker arms. These pistons slide into position to lock together the three intake rockers in a given cylinder, which then follow a single high-lift, long-duration cam lobe. With the engine's intake valve lift and opening duration continuously adjusted to suit the operating engine speed, the TL benefits with a broad torque curve and superior peak power.

    COLD-AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM
    Cool air is denser than hot air and allows an engine to make more power by packing more oxygen per given volume. To capitalize on this fact, the TL has a special cold-air induction system as standard equipment. Ambient air is picked up through an inlet in the left front fascia, and fed by a duct to the engine air intake. Depending on vehicle speed, this system supplies the engine with ambient air that is much as 15 degrees F. cooler than typical engine compartment air.

    A new low-restriction induction system improves breathing in the new TL. In addition to providing more aggressive sound under acceleration, this new system flows 40 percent more air than the system in the '03 TL, and about four percent more than in the '03 Type-S.

    DUAL-STAGE INTAKE MANIFOLD
    Like the previous TL Type-S and the MDX, the new TL has a dual-stage intake manifold. Working in concert with VTEC, this manifold improves low-speed torque without sacrificing high rpm power. The manifold is divided into two banks with three cylinders fed by each bank. The powertrain control module (PCM) controls butterfly valves between each bank. At low engine speeds the valves are closed; each separate bank of the manifold is tuned to maximize the resonance effect of the incoming air and increase cylinder filling and the torque through the lower part of the engine's rpm range. 

    As the engine rpm rises, the resonance effect fades, and the butterfly valves connecting the two banks of the intake manifold open. Now the resonance from individual pressure pulsations is eliminated, and an inertia affect helps the mass of air rushing down each intake passage. This provides more charge than each cylinder would normally ingest, working like mild supercharging to enhance horsepower at high engine speeds. The manifold changeover rpm is set somewhat lower in the rpm range than is the VTEC changeover rpm. This works to smooth and broaden the torque delivery. More than 75 percent of the peak torque is available from 2100 rpm to 6500 rpm.

    DIRECT IGNITION AND DETONATION-KNOCK CONTROL
    Optimum ignition spark timing is crucial to engine power and efficiency, and varies based on the engine's load, rpm, temperature and other factors. The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors engine functions to determine the best spark timing. An engine block mounted acoustic detonation-knock sensor "listens" to the engine; based on this input, the PCM retards the ignition timing incrementally to prevent potentially damaging detonation. Platinum-tipped sparkplugs are applied, each with an individual coil unit positioned above in the access bore, and require no service prior to 105,000 miles.

    PROGRAMMED FUEL INJECTION (PGM-FI)
    The Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system tracks several engine inputs including throttle position, intake air temperature, water temperature, intake manifold pressure, etc. and monitors the exact state of the exhaust gas. Based on these inputs PGM-FI knows when to trigger and how long to keep open the high efficiency multi-hole injectors that deliver fuel to each cylinder.

    DRIVE-BY-WIRE THROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEM™
    Like the TSX sports sedan, the new TL engine has an advanced Drive-by-Wire Throttle System (DBW) technology that eliminates the need for a conventional throttle cable. With the driver's throttle pedal movements interpreted electronically, the precise relationship between pedal movement and throttle butterfly valve opening can be varied to suit the driving conditions. By altering the amount of "gain" between the pedal and butterfly valve, significant improvements in drivability are possible. DBW also allows the Sequential SportShift automatic transmission and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control to be fully integrated with engine function.

    The DBW system monitors various parameters such as pedal position, throttle position, road speed, engine speed and gear position. These inputs are then used to set the moment-to-moment relationship between the pedal position and throttle butterfly opening. In low-speed driving, the system has relatively little gain, so that engine response is smooth and progressive for smooth launches from a standing start. At higher speeds, the gain progressively increases to provide confident acceleration for passing and climbing hills.

    HIGH-FLOW EXHAUST SYSTEM WITH CLOSE-COUPLED CATALYZERS
    To reduce weight and move the engine's two primary catalytic converters as close as possible to the combustion chambers, the TL exhaust manifolds are cast right into the cylinder heads. A 900-cell per-square-inch high efficiency converter mounts directly to the exhaust port of each cylinder head for extremely rapid converter light off after the engine starts. This mounting system has the added benefit of eliminating traditional exhaust header pipes, which saves a total of 17.6 pounds.

    To ensure optimum flow and reduce backpressure, a new hydroformed 2-into-1 collector pipe carries spent gases down to a 350 cell-per-inch secondary converter under the passenger cabin. A new design for the exhaust system downstream of the secondary catalyst, including the dual silencers, further reduces back pressure and is 11 percent lighter than the comparable Type-S arrangement. Because these smaller silencers are easier to package, the rear of the new TL has a more refined appearance, finished by dual trapezoidal exhaust outlets that are tightly integrated into the rear fascia.

    EMISSIONS CONTROL
    To develop class-leading power while meeting tight CARB LEV-2/ULEV emissions standards, the TL pushes technology on multiple fronts. It makes more horsepower while creating less exhaust emissions-and is certified to this level of emissions performance for 120,000 miles (20,000 more than required by the current LEV standard).

    The cylinder head-mounted close-coupled catalysts ensure very quick light off after engine start up, and a new 32-bit RISC microprocessor in the powertrain control module (PCM) boosts computing power. High efficiency multi-hole fuel injectors deliver fuel to each cylinder and direct fuel around the intake valve stem for improved atomization, which helps to further reduce emissions, particularly after starting.

A rigid forged crankshaft, die-cast accessory mounts, and a stiff, cast aluminum-alloy oil pan also contribute to overall engine smoothness. Both the induction system and the new lightweight exhaust system have been tuned to create a refined, sporty engine sound at large throttle openings and high rpm.

    105,000-MILE TUNE-UP INTERVALS
    With long-lasting components like platinum-tipped spark plugs and a space-saving, self-tensioning serpentine accessory drive belt, the TL is an exceptionally low maintenance automobile. It requires no scheduled maintenance until 105,000 miles, other than periodic inspections and normal fluid and filter replacements. This first tune-up includes water pump inspection, valve adjustment, and replacement of the cam-timing belt and sparkplugs.

    MAINTENANCE MINDER
    The new TL has a Maintenance Minder system that automatically monitors the vehicle's unique operating condition to indicate to the driver when maintenance is required. Maintenance alerts are presented when the ignition is first turned on, not while driving (to prevent driver distraction). The system monitors engine operating conditions such as fluid temperatures and engine speed to determine the proper service intervals. The Multi-Info Display (MID) located below the fuel and engine temperature gauges in the instrument cluster indicates the remaining percentage of engine oil life, and then shows service is due with a "wrench" icon. A percentage-based countdown to the next service is displayed when the car is within 15 percent of the end of the service interval. A letter and number code is displayed to indicate the specific type of service that is required. If the service is missed, the MID indicates past-due mileage to express the urgency of the required service to the driver.

    The system is designed to eliminate unnecessary maintenance procedures, environmental impact and expenses, while ensuring that important service issues are addressed. In some cases, oil change intervals can extend to a maximum of 10,000 miles, which could spare the owner considerable money and inconvenience over the life of the car. The owner-resettable system monitors all normal service parts and systems, including oil, oil filter, tire rotation, air-cleaner, automatic transmission fluid, spark plugs, timing belt, coolant, brake pads and more.

    6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION
    To further sharpen the enthusiast edge of the TL, for the first time ever it's offered with an available close ratio 6-speed manual transmission. This precise, short-throw unit is the same transmission offered in the 3.2 CL Type-S. It's designed to take advantage of the high power and torque of the new TL engine and give enthusiast drivers maximum control and responsiveness.

    This compact transmission is about the same size as a comparable 5-speed manual and is substantially lighter than the Sequential SportShift automatic transmission. It features a high-pressure-cast aluminum-alloy transmission housing to save weight. To further reduce weight and size, special narrow, high-strength steel gears are used, and the shafts are hollow. Close ratio spacing helps provide quicker acceleration by keeping engine revs up close to the power peak. Brass multi-cone synchronizers are used on first through fourth gear with a single-cone synchronizer for reverse to reduce shift load and help ensure smooth, precise shifting. A large gear-teeth contact area helps to reduce gear noise. A reverse lockout feature prevents the transmission from accidentally being shifted into reverse while the car is moving forward.

    CLUTCH AND DUAL-MASS FLYWHEEL
    The TL has a compact clutch unit that's self-adjusting for consistent pedal height, feel and effort throughout its service life. This innovative clutch system automatically takes up the slack between the pressure plate and clutch disc and lowers release loads while maintaining consistent pressure for the diaphragm spring.

    To reduce drivetrain shock and limit the torque load on transmission components, the clutch includes a one-way delay orifice (check valve) located in the slave cylinder that restricts return fluid flow during rapid clutch engagement. This makes the clutch engagement more gradual during overly aggressive release.

    A dual-mass flywheel helps to reduce noise, cut down the transfer of engine vibration into the cabin and provide increased comfort during shifting. This unit is divided into two flywheels with a torsion spring and viscous damper sandwiched between the two. This design enhances the durability of the synchronizers, reduces vibration and gear rattle and reduces the shift load.

    LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIAL
    When equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, the TL features a standard limited-slip differential (LSD). This helical-gear-type LSD enhances traction during acceleration and reduces understeer in high cornering load situations.

    A set of helical gears mounted within the ring gear carrier responds to wheel spin at either front wheel by directing torque from the spinning wheel to the wheel with the best traction. This system improves traction when cornering, and when negotiating slippery surfaces or surfaces where traction is uneven from side to side.

    5-SPEED SEQUENTIAL SPORTSHIFT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
    To combine the convenience of an automatic transmission with the precise driver-oriented control of a manual, the TL features a 5-speed Sequential SportShift automatic. Five closely spaced ratios help deliver strong acceleration combined with a high level of fuel efficiency at cruising speed. The new Drive-by-Wire Throttle System allows the engine and transmission to coordinate their functions electronically, resulting in much quicker and smoother upshifts and downshifts.

    When in automatic mode, the transmission incorporates an advanced Grade Logic Control System and Shift Hold control, which work to reduce gear "hunting" and unnecessary shifting.

    To cut down on unnecessary shifting when negotiating winding roads, the Sequential SportShift automatic incorporates improved logic called Shift-Hold Control. When the throttle is suddenly released and the brakes are applied, as is the case when decelerating at the entrance of a corner, Shift-Hold Control keeps the transmission in its current (lower) ratio as it negotiates the corner and accelerates out. This feature leaves the chassis undisturbed by excess shifting, and ensures that abundant power is available without a downshift at the exit of the corner.

    The 5-speed automatic alters its shift schedule when traveling uphill or downhill to reduce shift frequency, and improve speed control. Throttle position, vehicle speed and acceleration/deceleration are continuously measured, then compared with a map stored in the transmission computer. The Grade Logic Control System then determines when the car is on a hill and automatically adjusts the shift schedule to hold the engine in a lower gear for better climbing power or increased downhill engine braking.

    Manual Mode Operation

    The Sequential SportShift transmission can be shifted into manual mode by moving the selector lever laterally to a special gate to the left of the "Drive" position. When in the manual gate, a forward push selects a higher gear and a rearward pull selects a lower gear. Special shift logic in manual mode delivers quicker, firmer shifts than in fully automatic mode. An LED display in the instrument panel indicates which gear the transmission is in.

    A variety of safety features help protect the engine and drivetrain from damage. The transmission will upshift from first to second automatically if the driver doesn't command an upshift in time. In second, third and fourth, the transmission won't upshift without a command from the driver; the ECU cuts off fuel flow to the engine if there is danger of over-revving the engine. The transmission will upshift itself to prevent engine damage in the rare situation where the fuel cutoff alone is unable to prevent further engine over revving (as could happen on a steep downhill). When downshifting, the transmission won't execute a driver-commanded downshift that would send the engine beyond redline in the lower gear. To prevent lugging away from a stop in a high gear, the Sequential SportShift transmission will automatically downshift to first gear as it comes to a stop, even in manual mode.

    5-POSITION SHIFT GATE
    The new TL benefits from a new 5-position shift gate that simplifies the operation of the transmission. It features a quieter linkage and a speed-controlled reverse lockout solenoid to prevent transmission damage. When operated in automatic mode, the transmission lets the driver choose between D (Drive) and L (Low). When moved to the Low position, the transmission downshifts to the lowest possible ratio for the current road speed to provide maximum engine braking. If the vehicle continues to slow, the transmission progressively downshifts to maintain engine braking effect. When it has shifted all the way down to first gear, an upshift back to second gear is automatically available if speed increases, but the transmission won't upshift further unless the driver moves the selector back to the D (Drive) position where normal transmission operation resumes.

    ACTIVE LOCKUP TORQUE CONVERTER
    The 5-speed Sequential SportShift automatic includes a new generation of active lockup torque converter that improves fuel economy while maintaining a high level of drivability. A precise linear solenoid expands the speed and throttle setting range in which lockup can be engaged in the top four gears. This results in a reduction in transmission slippage for an improvement in fuel mileage. The torque converter is now calibrated to offer more progressive acceleration than in the past, coupled with better acceleration at large throttle openings. The efficient Sequential SportShift automatic transmission couples with tall overall gearing to deliver 28 mpg on the highway. City mpg for both transmissions is identical at 20 mpg.

    COOPERATION BETWEEN 5AT AND DRIVE-BY-WIRE
    With the new Drive-by-Wire Throttle System, the function of the engine and transmission can be closely choreographed for faster, smoother shifting. Upshifts from first to second gear, and from second to third gear, are more than 0.3 seconds quicker-a 33 percent or better improvement. In manual mode, driver-commanded downshifts are also more than 0.3 second quicker. Meanwhile, the peak g-or "shift shock"-has been reduced significantly during upshifts and downshifts.

    2004 Acura TL - Body | Part 1

    OVERVIEW
    Near-luxury sedan buyers love the previous Acura TL and TL Type-S for their performance and handling. They also love their build quality, durability and resale value when the time comes to trade in. For the 2004 TL, the designers chose to "step outside the box" to provide TL customers with a daringly more emotional and athletic design.

    DESIGN CONCEPT
    Acura designers worked from the wheels up on the 2004 TL to design a vehicle with aggressiveness and power, agility and endurance. Designers began with the stance of the vehicle-how it looks and sits on its suspension. They worked towards a look of poise, with a promise of agility and power. The contrast of muscular tension and fluid lines flows through the sheet metal, with the long wheelbase, short front and rear overhangs and wide track setting the tone.

    The design team leaders were, in part, influenced by "Bauhaus" styling themes. Founded in 1919, Bauhaus was the first and most famous German design house. Bauhaus set a template for European design with the now-famous maxim, "Form follows function." That classic design logic meshes well with established Acura design philosophies.

    An excellent example of this fresh design sense is in the dynamic new "face" of the TL, with its strong character and reduced body openings. An under-bumper cooling air system makes this new look possible because most of the cooling air is drawn in beneath the front fascia.

    In determining the overall dimensions of the new TL, the BMW 530i and Lexus ES 300 were the primary benchmarks. Audi's A4, the Infiniti G35, and the Mercedes-Benz C320 and S60 were secondary targets.

    The 2004 TL is about two inches wider than the 2003 BMW 530i, with about than 2 inches greater track in front and back. Compared to the ES 300, the TL is 1.5 inches wider, about two inches shorter, with a wider front and rear track. It is also nearly a foot longer, nearly five inches wider, and has a substantially wider track than the Mercedes-Benz C320.

    RIGIDITY
    Adding stiffness to a vehicle's unit body improves road holding and makes the driver feel more connected to the car, but it also can add weight. In the 2004 TL, increased use of high strength steel accounts for a strong unit body structure that is also light. A front shock tower brace, a more rigid front bulkhead, a roof stiffener that extends to the C-pillar, and a new parcel shelf box section also contribute to stiffness. Improved attachment of the front frame rails, roof and rear panel and parcel shelf and larger rear unit body gussets also contribute to overall stiffness.

    The average torsional rigidity is 24 percent greater than the '03 TL and even better than the BMW 3 Series, one of the TL target competitors. The new front bulkhead substantially improves front lateral bending rigidity by 30 percent over the previous TL.

    HIGH-TENSILE STEEL
    High-tensile 440 and 590 steel was used for 48 percent of the body. Even though the forming process is similar to that used for standard steel, the chemical composition of high-tensile steel allows it to be stronger after forming. Parts can therefore be made thinner and lighter while maintaining strength.

    AERODYNAMICS
    Design and engineering objectives for the new TL required aerodynamic creativity. The challenge was to allow stylists to craft the TL front end as powerfully and emotionally as they wanted, without impeding the airflow essential for engine operation. Moreover crash safety, high-speed stability, reduced wind noise and high fuel mileage were essential.

    Achieving the desired exterior styling required that most of the cooling air come from under the front of the car. Several different polypropylene panels enhance underbody aerodynamic performance. These lightweight and durable panels include a curved valance below the front fascia. Air attaches to its smooth radius at highway speeds and is directed into the radiator. The center section of the valance bends out of the way if the TL encounters a curb or other obstruction.

    Other aerodynamic elements include refined A-pillar shape, front and rear deflectors, an engine undercover and a rear floor cover. These underbody improvements benefit fuel economy, reduce wind noise and improve high-speed stability. Internal testing reveals that the 2004 TL betters the BMW 530i, Mercedes-Benz C320, Lexus ES 300 and Volvo S60 in coefficient of drag.

    REDUCED WHEEL ARCH GAPS
    Minimizing the visual gap between the edges of the tires and the wheel arches was an important design goal. To retain a wide wheel track with these narrow gaps, the TL has a special fender flange design that allows the tires to sweep up and inside without making contact during suspension movement.

    MASS REDUCTION
    Keeping the 2004 TL curb weight low was a matter of the highest priority for Acura. Despite a comprehensive array of new technologies and the added use of insulating materials to promote an even quieter and more luxurious cabin, strict control over component weight has kept the new TL to just 3,575 pounds, only 17 pounds more than the 2003 TL Type-S. And at 3,482 pounds, the 6-speed model actually weighs 76 pounds less.

    This small weight differential between '03 and '04 models becomes all the more impressive considering these 2004 TL improvements and additions:

    POWER GLASS MOONROOF
    The 2004 TL has the largest moonroof Acura has ever developed. It lends a tremendous open feeling to the car, and features the convenience of new 1-touch opening and closing, and a new anti-pinch safety feature, the first for an Acura moonroof.

    At 30.7 inches, the moonroof is wider than the previous TL moonroof. In addition, the larger moonroof also opens deeper than that of the previous TL. The overhang of the edge into the opening is reduced to 1.6 inches from 4.4 inches in the previous TL. The moonroof itself is virtually flush, reducing the chance of wind noise. There is also a special flush type seal that promotes quietness.

    2004 Acura TL - Body | Part 2

    HID (HIGH-INTENSITY DISCHARGE) HEADLIGHTS
    Previously, the TL had HID (High-Intensity Discharge) low beams coupled with conventional halogen high beams. The new TL headlights feature HID high and low beams, as well as built-in fog lamps. These bi-function HID high/low beams are made possible by a shutter device that mechanically controls the light output of the HID unit. When the driver selects high beam, an electric solenoid in the headlight moves a shutter forward, opening up a greater reflector area inside the headlight. When the lights are operated on low beam, this shutter repositions to act as a cut-off to keep the lighted area closer to the vehicle.

    Compared to the previous TL, the new headlights dramatically increase the illuminated area, and are nearly 50 percent more effective at long range. The fog lamp illumination has also been increased.

    LED LIGHTING
    Extensive use of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) provides a high-tech image for the 2004 TL side and rear lighting. LEDs are used for the front side marker lights, Center High Mount Stop Lamp (CHMSL), taillights, and rear side marker lights.

    These LED arrays have more uniform lighting and a unique, modern look. They also have a quicker turn-on time and a projected service life four times longer than normal automotive bulbs.

    5 MPH BUMPERS
    The Acura TL uses a highly efficient Xenoy thermoplastic energy absorber with a high-strength steel reinforcement beam that absorbs 80 percent of low-speed crash energy. This allowed designers to reduce the overhang of the bumper, while also reducing the weight and repair costs. Both the front and rear bumpers meet the federal government's damage-free regulation when tested at 5 mph. They are also lighter than previous versions: the weight savings are 3.0 pounds and 2.9 pounds front and rear, respectively.

    NOISE, VIBRATION & HARSHNESS (NVH) CONTROL
    Substantial improvements in noise, vibration and harshness were made over the previous TL. Measures include advanced aerodynamic design, the first U.S.-market use of automotive acoustic glass with shade band, insulating panels under the hood and inside the trunk and the fenders.

    Internal testing shows that the 2004 TL has less higher-frequency wind noise at the driver passenger "ear point" than the Audi A4, BMW 330i, BMW 530i, Infiniti G35, Lexus ES 300 and Mercedes-Benz C320. It is also measurably improved over the previous TL.

    Key 2004 TL NVH countermeasure areas include:

    Acoustically tuned glass windshield

    To reduce noise in the cabin the 2004 TL windshield is made of 4.7 mm thick acoustic glass, which consists of two layers of safety glass, separated by a thin acoustic resin center. This represents the first time that acoustic glass has been applied to a luxury vehicle in North America with a shade band. The new windshield reduces road noise on smooth asphalt significantly in the higher frequency ranges. To reduce noise intrusion through the side glass, the front and rear movable door glass is 5 mm thick compared to 3.5 mm for the previous TL.

    Thinsulate

    Patented by 3M, Thinsulate™ insulation was developed for thermal applications but it is also ideal for noise reduction. It is crushable and can be used in tight-clearance areas. In the TL it is used behind the door liners, rear seat side garnishes, center console, rear seatback and front and rear pillar garnishes. It is also used under the instrument panel and parcel tray.

    Trunk

    Engineers treated the trunk as an acoustic package, containing the speaker array and trunk hinges and springs in a rigid box structure. This improves audio bass performance, enhances reduces interior noise levels, enhances the appearance of the trunk interior, and reduces the chance that belongings will be damaged by a speaker or hinge.

    Aluminum-alloy front subframe

    Besides its low mass, the TL aluminum-alloy front subframe reduces "starting boom" (resonance noise) without the use of additional dampers.

    Melt Sheet

    The careful application of high-density melt sheet makes a huge reduction in high-frequency sound. Testing results shows it reduces the high frequency (approx. 500Hz and above) vibration of the TL floor panels, decreasing noise inside the vehicle. 

    POWER WINDOWS
    The 2004 TL has a front power window feature with an auto-open and auto-close feature. It also incorporates an anti-pinch safety feature. The glass is 5 mm thick-up from 3.5 mm thick in the 2003 TL-to reduce cabin noise.

    EXTERIOR (SIDEVIEW) MIRRORS
    Mirror housing needs to be small and aerodynamic to reduce turbulence-without compromising mirror area. To reduce the housing size engineers devised a way to hold the mirror element from behind instead of at the sides, and carefully controlled the gap between the mirror element and housing to further reduce turbulence. Blue-tinted mirrors also reduce eyestrain in bright conditions.

    Engineers also measured the airflow through the channel between the A-pillar and the mirror. By designing this channel in an expanding V-shape, the air actually decelerates (rather than accelerates) as it moves across the glass. This helps keep the air from tumbling across the side glass, reducing high- and mid-frequency noise.

    Engineers also positioned the mirrors forward, away from the window glass, to further reduce wind noise while increasing the driver's side view. A reverse tilt function automatically tilts either the left or right mirror down when the TL transmission is shifted into Reverse. This is a driver-selectable function that may be turned on or off as desired.

    DOORS & LATCHES
    To resist parking lot dings and dents, the 2004 TL door skins are made from special 340H high-tensile steel. This bake-hardened steel has much greater resistance to bending and a higher work-hardening threshold than conventional steel, making the door skins much more resistant to dents and dings. The door skins are 10 to 15 percent stronger with 50 percent better permanent deform resistance than conventional steel.

    Door fit is a matter of extraordinary precision on the TL. The gap is just 3.5 mm at the leading edge of the front doors, 4 mm between the doors, and 3.5 mm at the trailing edge of the rear doors.

    Acura precisely refined the door closing sound on the new TL. A new door sash structure, manufactured with a laser-welded blank, increases the rigidity of the door sashes and reduces objectionable high frequency noise as the doors are closed. A new door lock structure absorbs sounds caused by the latch, eliminating objectionable noise.

    BODY TRIM
    The aggressive and sporty styling on the 2004 TL is subtly enhanced by satin trim on the leading edge of the hood, on the grille, and above the license plate. The B-pillar and drip moldings are high gloss black, while aluminum step garnishes inside the door openings provide a finished appearance.

    EXHAUST FINISHERS
    The exhaust has bright trapezoidal finisher tips integrated into the rear styling. The tips are inset far enough to allow adequate bumper stroke in the event of a slow-speed collision, but are positioned far enough back to allow exhaust gases to pass beyond the bumper. Special multi-axis rubber mounts control the exhaust tip placement, allowing a closer fit of the rear bumper fascia. The gap is approximately 0.8 inch, compared to a gap of nearly 1.2 inches on the previous TL. A high heat-resistance polypropylene garnish is clipped to the bumper to protect it from heat.

    EXTERIOR PAINT
    The 2004 TL is available in eight pearl and three metallic exterior colors. The painting process begins when the steel body receives a phosphate bath to completely clean it of oils and film after welding is complete. This is followed by an electrodeposition primer bath, where the unit body is electrically charged to attract the primer. After baking, the color coat is applied, followed by a protective clear coat.

    OVERVIEW
    In a 5-passenger sedan, the benefits of front-wheel drive include lighter and more compact engine and driveline packaging, enhanced fuel efficiency, and increased passenger spaciousness.

    CHASSIS CONCEPT
    From a handling standpoint, the new TL chassis was designed to challenge the BMW 530i Sport, a magazine comparison favorite.

    To accomplish this, engineers focused on creating a rigid platform with a performance-tuned suspension and large tires. The large tire contact patches improve braking and handling with all-season tires. Available high-performance tires boost acceleration, handling and braking capability even higher on both dry and wet surfaces.

    The TL has excellent dynamic properties. It feels crisp and taut, corners flat and offers a high level of grip-even with four passengers aboard. In internal testing, both TL models (5-speed Sequential SportShift automatic transmission and 6-speed manual transmission) surpass the 2003 BMW 530i and the Lexus ES 300 in a 600-ft. slalom exercise and in maximum cornering capability.

    HYDROFORMED ALUMINUM-ALLOY SUBFRAME
    To reduce mass and improve handling agility, the 2004 TL uses an all aluminum-alloy front subframe that carries the engine, transmission and lower suspension links.

    The U-shaped subframe cradle is hydroformed. In this process, a single aluminum-alloy tube is inserted into an immensely strong die, which is locked closed before the tube is pressurized with water. The resulting component is lighter and stronger than a multi-piece component would be. The hydroformed cradle is then attached to aluminum-alloy corner brackets to form the complete subframe.

    Compared to the traditional steel subframe on the 2003 TL, the aluminum-alloy TL subframe weighs 36 percent (about 23 pounds) less. Besides its lighter weight, the new subframe has increased bending rigidity, which reduces noise experienced in the passenger cabin, particularly as the engine is starting. 

    ENGINE MOUNTS
    The 2004 TL has a pair of special fluid-filled Electronic Control Mounts. Connected to the hydroformed aluminum-alloy subframe, they reduce vibration when the engine is idling. The transmission has its own proprietary mounts including a special lower mount designed specifically to increase ride comfort.

    Besides the lower mounts, the TL engine also has a side mount that helps control lateral movement. And on the TL with 6-speed manual transmission, a special damper further reduces engine-rocking motion when the driver lets the clutch out or shifts.

    FRONT SUSPENSION
    The TL front suspension is a double-wishbone system with a rigid stamped steel upper arm and a steel lower arm. The system is functionally related to the systems used on Formula One and Indy Cars, and permits the best combination of roadholding, ride quality and packaging for the TL. The system uses coil-over shock absorbers that, unlike in strut suspension, are not stressed suspension members. This reduces suspension friction and improves responsiveness to bumps.

    Suspension camber gain is maximized through the use of a short upper arm, while steering feel is enhanced through a high placement of the lower arm.

    The upper suspension arm is extremely rigid to reduce the transmission of road noise into the cabin, while a special compliance bushing on the lower arm better absorbs bumps and improves ride quality. A steel bar connects the shock towers. Hollow, high-strength and lightweight, it enhances chassis solidity, steering precision and feel.

    A hollow tubular steel stabilizer bar is specially tuned to the best balance between firm handling and luxurious ride comfort.

    REAR SUSPENSION
    The TL rear suspension is a 5-link independent system with struts, coil springs and anti-squat and anti-lift geometry. It mounts to a steel subframe to improve road isolation and a help provide a quiet interior. The rear suspension geometry adds "toe-in" when the suspension is compressed, improving handling stability over bumps and during hard cornering and braking.

    A stabilizer bar further improves handling by limiting body roll, while a special "pillow joint" for the lateral links improves camber rigidity. Rubber shims added to the leading and trailing arm bushings improve ride comfort.

    STEERING
    The 2004 TL uses new torque-sensing, variable power-assisted rack and pinion steering. The engine-driven variable-output pump provides the kind of steering feel that driving enthusiasts like: modest steering effort at low speeds and precise feel at higher speeds. The steering feel is very linear and evenly weighted.

    Hydraulic steering dampers built into the system further improve stability during cornering and at high speeds. A one-way kickback valve decreases kickback in the steering wheel that can be caused by road irregularities. The hydraulic valve closes when it senses road irregularities, impeding disturbances to the steering wheel.

    Increasing the stiffness of the steering gearbox mounting and the rear sub frame also maximizes steering linearity.

    BRAKES
    The 2004 TL has 4-wheel disc brakes with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, an Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and 4-channel Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) including Traction control as standard equipment.

    The front brakes are ventilated cast-iron discs with single-piston calipers. For better fade resistance, cooling air flows to the brakes through the front fender air duct ahead of the front wheels. This cooling airflow reduces the brake temperature by 84o F. in high-demand fade tests. The rear brakes are solid discs, gripped by single piston calipers.

    Brembo rotors and aluminum-alloy front brake calipers are standard on the 6-speed manual transmission TL. The calipers have four pistons each, and more aggressive pad material, to offer improved brake feel and reduced fade in hard repeated brake applications. They are also 30 percent lighter than the standard calipers, saving 4.3 pounds per wheel, which in turn improves suspension response for better ride and handling. The calipers feature an attractive black painted finish with the Acura name.

    A single 10-inch vacuum booster is used to reduce weight, increase stiffness and deliver more direct braking feel. In a departure from the previous TL, a hand parking brake is used instead of a foot brake. This applies to both automatic and manual transmission models.

    Stopping distances from 60 mph have improved considerably from the previous TL Type-S. In internal testing the 2004 TL with all-season tires out-brakes the Lexus ES 300, and when equipped with high-performance tires the 2004 TL out-brakes the 2003 BMW 530i (also with high-performance tires).

    Electronic Brake Force Distribution

    A new feature for TL is Electronic Brake force Distribution, which continuously and automatically adjusts the pressure distribution between the front and rear brakes depending on how the vehicle is loaded.

    Brake Assist

    Brake Assist comes standard on the 2004 TL. Its purpose is to help the driver apply full braking pressure in an accident avoidance situation. To do so, a microprocessor continually analyzes and "learns" the driver's normal braking habits-monitoring both the rate of pressure applied and the total pressure that the driver normally applies to the brake system.

    If the driver suddenly applies the brakes, Brake Assist brings the system to full ABS activation to help stop the vehicle in the shortest distance possible. It is only activated when the microprocessor detects that certain brake pedal speed and pressure thresholds are reached.

    Importantly, Brake Assist does not "take over" braking on the TL-it only assists the driver in obtaining full braking performance in an emergency. Brake Assist deactivates when the driver releases pressure on the brake pedal.

    Anti-lock Braking System

    Standard on the 2004 TL is a three-channel Anti-lock Braking System, which works in conjunction with VSA System. Utilizing speed sensors located at each wheel the system modulates braking power to the front wheels independently and to the rear wheels in tandem-enhancing driver control during maximum-effort stops.

    VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST (VSA)
    The TL is equipped with 4-channel VSA that helps the driver retain control of the car in the event the vehicle reaches its dynamic traction limits, for example through aggressive cornering, encountering ice or dirt on the road, or entering a decreasing-radius corner too fast.

    In the event of understeer (where the front tires lose grip), the system applies the inside front and rear brakes to increase yaw (vehicle "rotation"), slowing the vehicle and enabling it to complete the turn. Engine torque may also be reduced by coordination of the Drive-by-Wire Throttle System and Engine Controller.

    The 4-channel system controls all four brakes independently. In the event of oversteer (where the rear tires lose grip), the system applies the outside front and rear brakes to decrease yaw, slowing the vehicle and enabling it to stay on its intended path.

    An indicator light on the instrument panel alerts the driver whenever the VSA system is actively enhancing the vehicle's stability.

    The Traction Control System (TCS) component of VSA uses sensors that monitor each of the wheels and a computer-controlled modulation of engine power and front brakes to help prevent wheel spin when starting out or accelerating. If the sensors detect wheel spin, TCS reduces engine power and applies brake force to the affected wheels. This helps the TL maintain traction during acceleration and helps the driver retain steering control, even when accelerating on slippery surfaces.

    A cockpit switch is provided to disable the vehicle stability and traction control aspects of the system while leaving the ABS system fully functional.

    WHEELS
    The 2004 Acura TL has lightweight 17 x 8-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Lighter wheels contribute to quicker suspension movement and better ride quality by contributing to lowering unsprung weight.

    Larger 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels are available. Finished in Dark Kaiser Silver, they are specifically designed to fit both the automatic- and manual-transmission models.

    TIRES
    Bridgestone developed new 17-inch all-season and high-performance tires especially for the TL. The standard tire is P235/45R17 M+S (all-season), with 235/45R17 high-performance tires available for the TL with 6-speed manual transmission. These sizes are significantly wider and more aggressive than the P205/60R16 and P215/50R17 tires of the previous TL and TL Type-S, respectively.

    The larger tires significantly contribute to the 2004 TL design objectives including its aggressive, athletic appearance. They also measurably improve dry handling and braking.

    Available high-performance tires further enhance dry handling, wet handling and braking, at the cost of performance in snow and accelerated wear. In warm weather these tires consistently outperform all-season tires in slalom speed, maximum cornering g force, and braking distance.

    About 95 percent of US-market 2004 TL units will have all-season tires (80 percent in Canada). It is anticipated that five percent of 2004 TL purchasers (mostly in Sunbelt states) will select high-performance tires.

    The TL with manual transmission has a T145/70R17 temporary spare tire. A T135/80R16 temporary spare is used on the TL with automatic transmission. The advantages of a temporary spare include maximum trunk space, and reduced vehicle weight for better handling and fuel economy.

    If a 2004 TL owner wishes to use chains to drive in difficult snow conditions the use of cable chains is recommended.

    AVAILABLE SPORT SUSPENSION
    An available sport suspension kit including all four shock absorbers and springs is scheduled for release shortly after the TL launch. Known as the "A-SPEC" kit, it provides firmer damping and spring rates for sportier handling. A lower ride height further distinguishes the Sport Suspension-equipped TL cosmetically.

      2004 Acura TL - Interior | Part 1

      OVERVIEW
      The Acura tradition of interior luxury and functionality continues with a new elegant and sporting interior for the 2004 TL. The instruments and controls are arranged to create an intimate and functional driver's cockpit that offers a feeling of connection and control. With its higher belt line, the TL has a substantial look and feel. Fine interior materials and close attention to detail and finish give the TL a tangible feeling of elegance. The newly enlarged EPA Mid-Size interior has stylish and highly supportive leather-trimmed seating and there's more headroom front and rear. Throughout the interior, virtually every system has been improved.

      The already long TL standard feature list has grown significantly with items like the first North American automotive application of a standard DVD-A audio system that takes advantage of the latest technology to deliver sound resolution that's 500 times higher than conventional CD audio. XM Satellite radio is also now on the standard equipment list. The standard Acura HandsFreeLink™ system lets the driver dial a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone by voice, while a Multi-Info Display (MID) shows mobile phone data, tracks the car's maintenance needs, displays warnings and offers an array of driver preference settings. The available Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition has a large 8-inch display, and much larger database and faster route computing time than the previous 3.2 TL system.

      STYLING
      Compared to the previous 3.2 TL and TL Type-S, the 2004 TL interior has a much more dynamic and distinctive look, yet upholds the longstanding Acura tradition of highly functional driving environments. Given the newfound handling agility and power built into the TL, its interior echoes a clear sporting message. At the same time, fine details and rich surface finishes make it clear that the TL has not shrunk from its luxury roots. Sweeping aluminum-alloy accents wrap around the doors, flow onto the instrument panel and dive down the center console. Wood patterned accents warm the interior in cars with Parchment and Camel leather, while Quartz and Ebony interiors have carbon fiber-look accents that create a technical edge.

      DRIVER-ORIENTED COCKPIT
      The TL interior puts all important systems and controls within easy reach of the driver. The systems used most frequently-audio, cruise control, Acura HandsFreeLink and Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition-have satellite controls positioned on the steering wheel. The LED backlit instrumentation is easy to read, and the switchgear and displays have an uncluttered look and intuitive operation. Helpful features make driving easier, like power rearview mirrors that can be set to automatically tilt-down when reverse is engaged to make parking simpler

      With a driver's 10-way power seat and a tilt/telescoping steering column, it's easy to get comfortable in the new TL. New one-touch moonroof switchgear is now located in the overhead console. The Sequential SportShift selector has been simplified for easier, more intuitive use. And for the first time ever, a short-throw, close ratio 6-speed manual gearbox is available. To better work with the manual gearbox, the TL parking brake is now a hand brake within easy reach on the center console. There is also a new bottom-hinged throttle pedal with a more linear feel and natural motion.

      LEATHER-WRAPPED STEERING WHEEL
      The driver can control multiple electronic functions using thumb-operated buttons on the TL steering wheel. The most commonly used; cruise control, HandsFreeLink, and audio controls are within easy reach. If equipped with the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition, two additional buttons handle voice activation for navigation and provide voice access to other features.

      SEATING
      Proper seat support helps foster a sense of connection with the car, and provides a useful avenue for dynamic chassis feedback to the driver. The new TL driver's seat has substantial side and shoulder bolstering to keep the driver in place during aggressive cornering. Given the sporting/luxury TL mission, the new 10-way power adjustable seat is engineered for long-haul comfort in addition to sporting support. Standard perforated leather-trimmed seating breathes for comfort, while a more generous (0.9-inch wider at the hip point than that of the previous Type-S) base cushion provides added hip room. Vertical travel of the standard power seat mechanism has been increased (there's 0.1-inch more "up" travel and 0.4-inch more "down" travel). All driver's seat power adjustments are included in Keyless Memory Link, a system that stores a pair of user profiles linked to the two key fobs that come with the TL.

      For proper support of people of varying sizes and shapes, the TL driver's seat has a two-way power adjustable lumbar support mechanism. Unlike lumbar supports that sometimes have a sharp-edged feel, the TL system has a smooth shape that matches the spinal curvature to provide solid support for the torso and pelvis. The stroke of the lumbar support unit has been increased 0.5-inch in the TL.

      The front passenger seat is four-way power adjustable and has a fixed lumbar support. With their carefully engineered shape-complete with side bolstering-the outboard rear seats blend luxury with sporting support. Four-way front headrests are adjustable for height and tilt; the rear outboard headrests adjust vertically.

      LED INSTRUMENTATION/INTERIOR LIGHTING
      Cleanly classic analog instrumentation keeps the TL driver in tune with the vehicle. The black-faced, LED backlit meters are highly legible day or night and have a technical "3D" appearance. The progressive self-illuminating gauge package gives the car a "welcoming" feel. When the door is first opened, the instrument lighting comes to life, then brightens progressively to 100 percent when the key is put in the ignition. The illuminated instrument needles and enunciator lights come alive when the ignition is turned on, indicating that the car is ready to go. At the end of the drive, the instrument lighting dims progressively.

      All the interior switches are illuminated to make them easy to find, including those on the steering wheel and all four doors. Blue LEDs in the overhead console cast a subtle ambient glow on the center console area and like all the meter lights, are controlled by a dimmer mounted on the left side of the instrument panel. New map/reading lights at all positions (not just in front) are now brighter and more focused, to provide better illumination with less driver distraction. A new master light switch is positioned in the overhead console for easy reach. The TL interior lights feature "theater dimming," which can be set by the driver to any of three rates via the Multi-Info Display (MID).

      INTERIOR ROOMINESS
      Relative to its predecessor, the new TL has gained interior space in key areas. The cabin has over a cubic foot more volume, putting the TL solidly in the EPA Mid-Size category. More important, headroom has been increased front and rear; there's a half-inch more clearance in front, and 0.8-inch more in back. Front legroom has increased incrementally, and, and front shoulder room has been boosted by a substantial 2.2 inches-making it the best among the car's immediate competitors. Newly re-contoured front seatbacks open up an additional 1.2 inches of knee room for back seat passengers. Front and rear, the TL has a flat floor with ample foot room.

      CARGO CARRYING VERSATILITY
      Careful attention to the trunk shape and layout allows it to carry two extra large and two medium hard suitcases, or clubs and duffel bags for four golfers. For longer items, a lockable rear-seat trunk pass-through can accommodate up to four sets of skis and poles.

      New attention to detail improves the finish and functionality of the TL trunk. Designed as a total acoustic package, it's now completely lined throughout with all wiring concealed, and the rear parcel shelf speakers and navigation unit fully protected. Enclosed hinge mechanisms minimize the potential for damage to luggage and a standard cargo net with a total of ten possible anchor points helps to secure objects. The spare tire is located under a tri-folding cover in the trunk floor and has a foam insert that keeps the jack and tools from rattling. The trunk can be opened via a release mounted on the dash low and on the driver's left, remotely with the key fob, or with a manual release accessible through the lockable trunk pass through. There is also an anti-trap release inside near the latch. For security, the trunk main switch is located in the glove box, which can be locked to prevent access by valets. A valet key is provided that will allow a parking attendant to operate the ignition, but will not to open the glove box, trunk, or rear seat pass-through.

      COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE ITEMS
      Comfort and convenience items are integrated throughout the handsome interior of the TL. There are slide-out cup holders in the front console and rear seat armrest that each handle two large drinks. There's a generously sized glove box, and the front doors have swing out rigid map pockets with removable sunglasses holders. Two covered storage areas are in the console immediately in front of the shifter; one holds four CD jewel cases, while the other has a rubber mat in the bottom and a 12-volt accessory socket. There's room for another 10 CDs or six DVD-A cases inside the main center console beneath the armrest. This 2-tier design has a leather covered sliding armrest (with more fore and aft travel than that of the old TL) and a flocked upper tray for cell phone storage. A removable coin holder is built in, as is a 12-volt accessory outlet. New rigid seat-back map pockets have a clean, elegant look. Overhead, you'll find a new roof console that incorporates a universal garage door opener.

      HIGH QUALITY INTERIOR FINISH
      Substantial advances in fit and finish are in evidence in the new TL interior. Upscale details include soft stitched passenger grab handles and concealed front seat belt D-rings, soft cloth headliner and roof pillar covers. Key interior accent panels are made of an aluminum alloy. Flush fits between the roof pillar linings and the headliner, flush interior door handle recesses and reduced panel gaps throughout the interior gives the TL interior a sleek and tailored appearance.

      To ensure uniform fit and perfect seams, the perforated leather-trimmed seating is now sewn on automated machines. For a more integrated appearance, the TL uses a new type of "slush molded" instrument panel covering that completely conceals the passenger-side SRS airbag. Almost everywhere you look, soft materials and satin finishes are used in places the driver or a passenger are likely to touch, including soft-touch interior door grab handles, padded door armrests, leather center console, leather fold-down rear armrest, and the leather wrapped steering wheel.

      DUAL-ZONE, DUAL-MODE ACURA AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM
      To keep the interior comfortable regardless of the weather outside, the TL has a new dual-zone, dual-mode Acura Automatic Climate Control System. This system lets the driver and front passenger set the temperature to their individual liking, plus they can each choose the airflow mode they like. A pair of adjustable vents in the rear of the center console keeps the back seat area comfortable. Large, simple to use controls make the system straightforward to use, even on cars equipped with the available Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition (NAVI). With a full set of conventional button-type controls for the climate control system, it is no longer necessary to access some climate control adjustments through the NAVI on-screen menus.

      3-D Solar Sensing
      With its position-sensing ability, the NAVI system contributes to overall passenger comfort with 3D Solar Sensing. Based on its continuously updated vehicle position information, the NAVI system can determine the position of the sun relative to the driver and passenger. With this information, the Acura Automatic Climate Control System automatically adjusts the temperature and system airflow from side-to-side as needed to compensate for asymmetrical solar heating. NAVI-equipped cars also offer the convenience of voice operation for some climate control functions.

      INTERIOR COLOR & TRIM COMBINATIONS
      To accommodate a wide range of buyer tastes, the TL interior comes in a large array of colors. The perforated leather-trimmed seating is available in Parchment, Camel, Quartz and Ebony. Each of the available eight exterior colors is offered with at least two (and up to four) interior color choices. Accent features vary based on the interior color. Parchment and Camel interiors have aluminum-alloy panels with rich wood grain accents. Quartz and Ebony interiors have aluminum-alloy panels with carbon fiber-look accents.

      KEYLESS MEMORY LINK
      A new keyless entry system called Keyless Memory Link gives the new TL a higher level of luxury and convenience by providing access to expanded memory functions. Two keyless entry fobs are provided with the TL; each fob can be linked to one of two driver profiles. As in the previous TL, the key fob used to unlock the car triggers a specific driver profile and the system automatically positions the power driver's seat and outside mirrors to match that profile. Keyless Memory Link goes several steps farther, however, by including in the driver profile the climate control system and all seven of the customizable memory functions that are available via the MID (Multi-Info Display).

      A number of functions are available via the key fob when outside the car. A single push of the "unlock" button will unlock only the driver's door; a second push unlocks all the doors. After unlocking all doors, holding down the "unlock" button down for more than one second will open the windows and moonroof to ventilate the car's interior.

      Still more functions are available with the key in the lock on the driver's door. A single twist unlocks only the driver's door; a second twist unlocks all the doors. If you hold the key in the unlock position for more than one second, the moonroof and all the windows begin to open; return the key to the normal position and the windows stop. When leaving the car, holding the key in the "lock" position will close the moonroof and all windows.

      ACURA/ELS PREMIUM 8-SPEAKER SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM WITH DVD-AUDIO, DTS™ AND CD 6-DISC CHANGER, AM/FM TUNER AND DOLBY® CASSETTE
      In keeping with the Acura approach of offering premium audio as standard equipment, the TL is outfitted with a cutting edge sound system that takes advantage of the latest advancement in sound reproduction. This sophisticated Acura/ELS® Premium 8-speaker Surround Sound System with DVD-Audio, DTS™ and CD 6-disc Changer, AM/FM Tuner and Dolby® Cassette is the first standard North America automotive application of DVD-A technology and has six different audio channels to create an accurate surround sound listening environment. There are speakers on the top of the instrument panel near the A-pillars, plus a center-fill speaker in the middle of the dash top. The two front doors each have a large driver, and in the rear parcel shelf there are two more drivers flanking an 8-inch subwoofer. In addition to the standard bass, treble, fader and balance controls, the system features additional subwoofer and center channel level controls. 

      Program material comes from a wide variety of sources. There is an AM/FM tuner coupled with a powered, active glass antenna in the rear window to pull in weaker signals. XM Satellite Radio is integrated into the receiver to provide more than 100 channels (36 are commercial-free) of digital program material with near-CD quality sound. A text display in the center panel (or on the NAVI screen of cars so equipped) provides information text on the program material.

      In addition, the TL system will also play conventional cassettes. CDs, DTS discs and DVD audio discs can be loaded into the 6-disc, in-dash changer. DVD audio is the next step in audio reproduction technology. Many new releases are being issued in this new format, and many older recordings are being re-mastered and reissued to take advantage of the superior sound that DVD audio offers. With over 500 times higher resolution than CD audio, DVD audio delivers smoother, fuller and far more accurate sound through six discrete channels. The TL is the first North American standard production application of this new technology. (The system will not play DVD movies, DVD-V, DVD-R/RW, MP3 or WMA media.)

      To make this capable system simple to operate, steering wheel mounted controls of key functions are positioned within fingertip reach. On cars equipped with the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition, select audio system functions can be accomplished via voice commands.

      XM SATELLITE RADIO
      XM Satellite Radio lets TL drivers listen to over 100 digital channels, many of which are commercial-free, with near CD-quality sound.

      XM's broadcast signal is beamed from two earth-station antennas at the XM studios in Washington D.C. to two broadcast satellites positioned more than 22,000 miles above the earth in geostationary orbit. The beams from these two broadcast satellites, one located over the west coast, one over the east coast, combine to span the entire continental U.S. while remaining stationary with respect to the land below. Over 1,000 ground antennas, or repeaters, keep the signal strong in challenging locales such as urban areas with tall buildings. The result is that while many commercial radio stations can only be picked up within a 40 or 50-mile radius from their source, XM radio can be heard throughout the 48 continental states. That means no channel switching on long trips and minimal loss of signal.

      Programming includes 70 music channels, 30 channels devoted to sports, talk, children's programming and entertainment, and one premium channel, which is available for an additional fee. Currently, 36 stations are free of commercial interruptions. Stations that do have commercials are limited to about six minutes per hour, far less than on commercial, non-satellite programming.

      XM hardware is embedded in the car's music system. When XM is being played, a display shows the current station, song title or artist's name. XM Satellite Radio service is priced at $9.99 per month. A complimentary three-month subscription to the XM Satellite Radio service is included with purchase of the TL and customers are able to continue the service or cancel any time after.

      MULTI-INFO DISPLAY (MID)
      To keep the driver informed of the car's status and to access multiple electronic functions the TL has a standard Multi-Info Display (MID). This LED backlit screen and its push-button controls are located on the right side of the instrument cluster. The MID is the interface for odometer/trip odometer, outside temperature, trip computer, custom memory settings, HandsFreeLink™ and vehicle warnings. Maintenance Minder alerts are also presented via the MID (see the Engine section of this press kit for more detail on Maintenance Minder).

      The MID makes it easy to customize the function of many electronic features in the TL. Custom settings include automatic door locking/unlocking, door unlock selection, keyless acknowledgement feedback, security re-lock timer, headlight auto-off timer and interior light dimming timer. To make it easy to track warnings (such as "Check fuel cap," or Maintenance Minder warnings) displayed on the MID, a memory feature lets you scroll through previous warnings for review.

      HANDSFREELINK™
      To improve driving safety and convenience, the TL has a standard HandsFreeLink system that is designed to work with Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones with Hands-Free capabilities (sold separately). Bluetooth is a radio frequency-based cable replacement technology that lets portable devices like PDAs, mobile phones, laptops and other devices communicate wirelessly. The TL system is compatible with Bluetooth-enabled cell phones that have the Hands Free Profile (HFP). After an initial, one-time "pairing" process, the TL communicates wirelessly and securely with the driver's cell phone when it's within about 30 feet of the car. The phone needs to be on, but can be stowed in a pocket, briefcase or purse-anywhere inside the vehicle cabin.

      HandsFreeLink allows the driver to send or receive calls without taking his or her hands from the steering wheel. When a call comes in, the number of the incoming caller is displayed on the Multi-Info Display (MID) located in the instrument cluster. The phone ring tone is also played over the audio system. If the driver chooses to answer the call, a press of the steering wheel-mounted "Talk" button mutes the audio system and the incoming caller is heard over the audio system speakers. A microphone located in the overhead console picks up the driver's voice. Algorithms built into the HandsFreeLink system cancel "echo effect" and reduce background noise to improve the transmission quality of the driver's speech.

      To send a call hands free, the driver can dial the number by voice, again using fingertip controls mounted on the steering wheel to activate the system. The driver also can store up to 50 frequently called numbers with voice tags in the system's memory. Up to six different compatible mobile phones can be paired with the HandsFreeLink system.

      ACURA NAVIGATION SYSTEM WITH VOICE RECOGNITION
      The new TL is available with the latest generation of the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition. With a large 8-inch display, a huge database covering over seven million points of interest, plus expanded voice-recognition capabilities (compared to the systems in other Acura models), this system is exceptionally capable and easy to use.

      Based on positioning data from up to 12 orbiting Global Positioning Satellites (GPS), the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition system tracks the vehicle's position. If the antenna (located on the rear parcel shelf) is blocked by a tunnel, tall building or parking garage, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle to keep the mapping information current and reliable until satellite reception is restored. A DVD is located in the trunk in the system's ECU. Updated DVD data discs are available on an annual basis on-line or by calling a toll-free number.

      The system can be controlled by voice, the conveniently positioned touch-screen display or via joystick positioned just below the display. For voice operation, the driver simply presses the "Talk" button on the steering wheel and says any of a number of preset command phrases. The system responds to a total of 293 phrases that are accessible through a variety of sub-menus.

      When the "Talk" button is pressed, the audio system is automatically muted, and a microphone located in the overhead console receives the command. Commands can be given in plain English, like "Find nearest hospital," "Display gas stations," or "Find nearest Chinese restaurant." You can choose to display points of interest on the map (like restaurants, or grocery stores, for example), or have the system provide turn-by-turn navigation-all by voice. The extensive point of interest (POI) database includes phone numbers, which can be called easily using the HandsFreeLink system and the driver's cell phone. Once a POI has been selected, pushing the "send" button on the touch screen dials the number.

      The Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition can also be controlled via the touch screen by choosing menu options or spelling out a word (e.g., an address, business name or place) using a touch-sensitive on-screen keypad. The display's matte finish reduces glare and smudging, and the keypad can be set to alphabetical or a common typewriter style layout. Alternately, the joystick can be used to highlight menu options or to highlight specific letters on the keypad to complete a word.

      INTERIOR ACCESSORIES
      Acura dealers offer a range of interior accessories for the new TL, including, shift knobs for Sequential SportShift automatic and 6-speed manual transmission, all-season mats, trunk tray, cigar lighter, and ashtray. A special steering wheel with a distinctive shape and stitching is also offered as part of the A-SPEC package, (See the Body & Chassis section for information on other available accessories.)

      2004 Acura TL - Safety

      OVERVIEW
      The 2004 TL was developed to perform at the "top of its class" in protecting its occupants with a comprehensive array of safety technologies, high-grade materials and advanced construction techniques.

       While the previous Acura TL was well equipped with passive safety technologies including front seat-belt load limiters and side airbags, the new 2004 TL further extends these capabilities with adjustable rear outboard head restraints and standard side curtain airbags. These technologies, and the use of high-tensile steel in critical areas and computer-modeled crush zones, ensure the highest possible level of passenger protection. The 2004 TL is projected to pass the toughest government safety tests with 5-star ratings in addition to achieving a "GOOD" rating in all categories evaluated during the IIHS offset collision. The TL safety equation even extends to pedestrians with structural elements designed to reduce the likelihood of serious injury in a collision.

      FEATURES
      The new TL offers its occupants the latest Acura safety technologies. These include:

      SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS
      The 2004 TL side curtain airbags deploy from a module in the roof in the event of a side impact. They provide an important and significant level of head protection in the window area from the A-pillar back to the C-pillar. Research shows that the g forces affecting an occupant's head are vastly lower with a side curtain airbag.

      The airbag module is located in the side of the roof and the gas generator is positioned in the C-pillar. It supplies gas to the airbag through a channel in the roof side. Front and rear "satellite" sensors (one located at the base of the B-pillar and another located near the rear seat back) detect side impacts and signal the gas generator.

      In addition to the side curtain airbags, a side airbag located in each front outboard seat bolster provides protection to the thorax in the event of a side impact.

      SIDE IMPACT
      The use of high-tensile steel significantly contributes to the side impact performance on the new TL and a reduction in injury for occupants. The government SINCAP (Side Impact New Car Assessment Program) test is one of the toughest to pass. In this test, a 1,360 kg (2,992 pounds) sled impacts the side of the stationary vehicle at 38.5 mph.

      The best defense against this impact is a strong energy-absorbing body structure built with high-tensile steel. The TL uses high-strength steel in key areas to provide the required strength without excessive weight.

      During a side impact collision, forces are distributed across the computer-engineered body structure, lessening forces that affect the occupants. Dual steel door beams in each front door and a single door beam in each rear door team with energy-absorbing padding to further absorb crash energy.

      The 2004 TL is designed to pass the government SINCAP test with a 5-Star/5-Star rating, the top rating attainable. This rating will exceed the performance of the previous TL as well as that of many competitors. The 2004 TL was developed with the new IIHS Side Impact Crashworthiness Evaluation (SICE) in mind, and is expected to receive and "Acceptable" rating.

      DUAL-STAGE, DUAL-THRESHOLD FRONT AIRBAGS
      Dual-stage airbags for the driver and front passenger are designed to provide maximum protection for the head and chest during a moderate to severe front collision, while simultaneously helping to reduce injuries and cost. They do both through the use of a dual-stage, dual-threshold airbag technology. Each airbag inflator has two stages. During a severe collision both stages fire simultaneously to provide quick inflation of the airbag. But during a moderate collision the igniters fire in sequence, slowing the deployment rate of the airbags.

      Besides the severity of the collision, the modules interpret a signal from the seat belt buckle switch that indicates whether the occupants are wearing their seat belts.

      • If the front passengers are not wearing their seat belts, the airbags will deploy at the same threshold as conventional airbags.
      • If the front passengers are wearing their seat belts, the airbags will inflate at a slightly higher threshold.

      FRONT IMPACT
      The Acura TL underwent a barrage of internal front-impact testing to verify the vehicle structure and occupant-protection performance. Two of these tests include the government's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) test and the Front Offset test conducted by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). These two standardized tests rate front impact performance.

      In the NCAP test the vehicle impacts a rigid barrier at 35 mph. During the IIHS offset test the vehicle impacts a deformable barrier at 40 mph with a 40-percent offset. During internal testing, the 2004 TL achieves a 5-Star rating for driver and passenger in the NCAP test and a GOOD rating for all points in the IIHS test mode. Both are the highest rankings achievable. Acura achieved these outstanding results with the implementation of pretensioners and load- limiting seat belts in conjunction with an energy-absorbing body structure that uses high-strength steel in critical locations.

      Using computer simulations allowed determining the critical load paths to help determine where to use high-strength steel. The use of high-strength steel helps to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle and reduces the amount of intrusion to a passenger safety cage-the rigid perimeter that envelops the occupant during a collision.

      BUMPER SYSTEM
      In addition to evaluating injury projections in collisions, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also evaluates vehicles for damage resistance in low-speed collisions. IIHS conducts four tests at 5 mph-front flat impact, front 30-degree impact, rear flat impact, and rear pole impact. The combined damage sustained during these four tests is the overall repair cost.

      The target repair cost s for these tests are lesser than the repair cost for the average TL competitor. The new front and rear bumper systems on the TL get the credit. They incorporate high-strength rolled-form bumper beams and highly efficient thermoplastic energy absorbers to disperse low-speed collision energy.

      PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
      Acura's interest in safety extends to pedestrians as well as vehicle occupants. To help reduce pedestrian injuries in the event of a collision, the new TL hood and fender areas were designed to deform if contacted by the head of an adult or child pedestrian. Energy-absorbing collapsible hood supports, wiper arms and fender mounts allow substantial deformation in an impact, allowing the engineering team to meet its target for pedestrian safety.

      NECK INJURY REDUCTION SEATS
      The driver and passenger seats are designed to reduce neck injuries.

      ACTIVE SAFETY SYSTEMS
      Besides its passive safety features, the TL has a full complement of technologies designed to aid in driver control and in challenging driving conditions and circumstances.

      These include:
