Acura SLX Gains More Power, New Styling for 1998

With an all new, more powerful engine and a new Torque-On-Demand four-wheel-drive system, redesigned exterior styling and a long list of standard luxury amenities, the Acura SLX continues as one of the best values in the luxury sport utility vehicle market.

The 1998 SLX features an all new four-wheel drive powertrain with a larger, more powerful 3.5-liter, DOHC V-6 engine, producing 215-horsepower and featuring Torque-On- Demand, four-wheel-drive system is activated with the touch of a button and automatically transfers power to where it is needed most. The new look of the SLX reveals updated styling with a completely redesigned front end including new bodywork, lighting, grille, alloy wheel design and body-colored side mirrors. Keeping in mind what luxury SUV consumers want in their vehicles, the Acura SLX is available in a single, fully-appointed trim level.

"The SLX has been significantly changed this year to meet the needs of the ever-expanding ranks of SUV drivers," said Rich Thomas, Acura's executive vice president and general manager. "It has been one of the best kept secrets in the SUV market and now with the changes for 1998, we see the SLX gaining a broader awareness among luxury SUV buyers."

New standard features on the SLX for 1998 include a redesigned instrumentation panel that includes an LCD odometer and trip meter. Enhancements for the model year also include a refined automatic cruise control system and a new AM/FM Cassette/CD audio system for greater sound quality, as well as illuminated vanity mirrors for both driver and passenger.

The SLX features a "power mode" for increased acceleration when necessary and a "winter mode" that starts the vehicle in third gear for enhanced traction. The fully-equipped SLX offers power fold-in mirrors, leather-trimmed interior, power windows and door locks, air-conditioning, heated front seats and wood-grain trim. The SLX also includes an electronic multi-meter, which contains a compass, altimeter, thermometer and barometer packaged in an easy-to-read, liquid crystal display above the rear view mirror.

The SLX offers ventilated front and rear disc brakes and an enhanced four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS). The double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension easily deliver compliant off-highway driving and a smooth ride on the open road.

Safety features in the SLX include "crumple zones" and side-protection door beams. Air bags are standard, as are three-point front and outboard rear seat belts. In addition, the vehicle's high stance offers excellent visibility.

The Acura SLX will be offered in a new two-tone exterior color, Baltic Blue with a silver lower body.
