Honda Marine: Honda Power Equipment Earns Two 2012 MarCom Awards

Honda Power Equipment, a division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., has received two new MarCom Awards for two of its computer-based dealer and distributor service training modules. The Honda Engines and Honda Marine training courses were recognized by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for their comprehensive training programs and individual instructional sections.

Honda Engines earned an overall Platinum MarCom Award for the Honda Engines Maintenance digital training course. Honda Marine was awarded a Gold MarCom Award for its propeller basics curriculum offered to dealer technicians via the Honda Marine online technical training program.

Honda produced its unique online service training solution with Irvine, California-based Pacific Technology Solutions (PTS). The training is used in Honda Engines and Honda Marine dealerships and distributor facilities nationwide.

Administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, the MarCom Awards program recognizes outstanding creative achievement by industry professionals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence, and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. Winners are selected from an average of more than 6,000 entries within 200 categories, covering seven forms of media and communication efforts, including: marketing; publications; promotions; public service/pro bono; creativity; and electronic/interactive.

Honda Marine: Honda Power Equipment Launches New Program for Dealers

Honda Power Equipment, a division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and marketer of a complete range of outdoor power equipment, announced today the launch of a new dealer program designed to support Honda Power Equipment, Honda Engines and Honda Marine product dealers participating in the company's global sustainability initiatives.

Honda has created an all new Eco-Guide to complement this dealer program, illustrating specific practices Honda dealers can undertake that will dovetail with, and extend the robust range of, Honda environmental strategies designed to meet the needs of an evolving environmental landscape.

The Eco-Guide offers information on small and large initiatives dealers can adopt to create environmental efficiencies at their facilities. The guide provides a comprehensive list of recycling, energy savings, and heating, cooling, water and community conservation initiatives, along with ways for dealerships to implement these activities. Printable files of posters and labels accompany the Eco-Guide to help dealers visually highlight their environmental efforts to customers and members of their communities. The guide also includes links to national and state environmental resources that are available to help dealers with their individual plans of action.

Environmental sustainability is a bedrock value at American Honda. When the company introduced its first marine outboard engine in 1964, Honda founder Soichiro Honda explained his position on helping protect the environment by noting that a marine engine should not emit oil into the same water where rice is grown. Mr. Dawley has secured his 'Master Tech' certification following a rigorous eight-hour test administered at a Honda Marine training center. Honda Marine: Honda Marine Announces Plan to Launch All-New Electric Shift Throttle System

Honda Marine introduced today a plan to introduce a Honda branded electronic shift and throttle system for its popular V6 outboard engines. The new Honda in-cowl system will provide shift and throttle actuation within the current outboard cowling envelope for ease of use and an integrated design.

Featuring a stylized control handle and tailored to Honda's exacting performance requirements, the shift and throttle system will be able to be installed on new and previously purchased BF200, BF225 and BF250 Honda outboard engines, creating a smooth incorporation into multiple products and boating platforms. Both single- and multi-engine applications can seamlessly accommodate the system without the need for additional installation kits or components.

"The new Honda electric shift and throttle system further enhances our commitment to creating engine products that provide the highest levels of customer satisfaction," said Alan Simmons, national manager, Honda Marine. "The introduction of this system allows our customers to enjoy an even better and more rewarding experience while using their Honda outboards."

Single engine systems will include features for improved throttle control while docking, fine tuning of trolling speed and multi-station applications. Multi-engine systems will include engine synchronization, single lever control for all engines utilizing the system, single bottom trim of all engines and individual trim controls for twin engine setups. The system will also feature onboard diagnostics for easy setup."

A compact control processor includes one processor per engine for system integrity and tachometer inputs for multi-engine synchronization. The shift actuator is shift mounted in the upper rigging cover with a three-position, high shift load capacity. For ease of installation, a two-piece rigging cover has been utilized.

Beginning in late summer / early fall of 2012, the new Honda electric shift throttle system will be available for installation at Honda Marine dealers and participating boat builders nationwide.

Two business units of Honda Power Equipment - Honda Engines and Honda Marine - were recognized by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for their comprehensive training programs and individual instructional sections.

Specifically, Honda Engines earned an overall Platinum MarCom Award for its Honda Engines Training and Certification System (TACS), along with specific recognition for two training modules offered within the system: 4-stroke engine theory and carburetor theory. Additionally, Honda Engines garnered a Gold MarCom statuette for its electrical fundamentals training module, while the company's basic emissions and DDiN navigation module were noted as receiving an honorable mention.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), along with a judging panel from Boating Writers International (BWI), today named the all-new Honda Marine BF250 engine as recipient of a 2011 IBEX Innovation Award for outboard engine technology.

BWI and the NMMA presented the 2011 award at the International Boat Builder's Exhibition (IBEX) show and conference at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

The IBEX Innovation Award is the industry's highest honor for innovative and technological advancement. The award recognizes advancements in OEM and aftermarket equipment based on specific criteria: innovative distinction from other products currently being manufactured; benefit to the marine industry and/or consumer; practicality; and cost effectiveness.

The all-new Honda BF250 engine incorporates the world's first marine direct air dual circuit induction system of its type on a production outboard. The first circuit draws air into the front and around critical engine components, and a top-mounted cooling fan draws cooling air over the alternator. The second circuit routes cool air from the upper intake vents, removes moisture, and then inducts it into the throttle body. This system provides for cooler, denser air for better combustion than conventional under-cowl induction systems.

Additionally, the Honda BF250's new idle-charging system was recognized as an innovative feature of the new engine. When the engine's electrical demand increases, the system automatically raises idle speed by 100 RPMs to generate nine additional amps for charging. With the BF250, boaters now can concurrently use multiple accessories without concern for draining their batteries.

The Honda Marine BF250 four-stroke engine is the newest and most powerful outboard to join the Honda Marine lineup and now becomes the company's flagship model. The design of the BF250 incorporates a number of advanced, technological innovations that contribute to the engine's high fuel economy and excellent performance.

The all-new Honda BF250 engine incorporates the world's first marine direct air dual circuit induction system of its type on a production outboard. The first circuit draws air into the front and around critical engine components, and a top-mounted cooling fan draws cooling air over the alternator. The second circuit routes cool air from the upper intake vents, removes moisture, and then inducts it into the throttle body. This system provides for cooler, denser air for better combustion than conventional under-cowl induction systems.

The styling concept of the Honda BF250 is a departure from other Honda Marine outboards in that the aesthetic design is sleeker and slimmer. In addition, the cowling of the new BF250 exhibits a sharper, more angular profile over previously introduced models. The overall design is streamlined and more aerodynamic, with chrome lines conveying power and speed.

The marine direct air dual circuit induction system on the new Honda BF250 engine is discussed in greater detail in the Power & Performance section of this press kit.

2. What other design attributes enhance the operation and performance of the new Honda BF250 engine?

The new Honda BF250 engine is NMEA 2000® certified. NMEA 2000 is a combined electrical and data specification for a marine data network for communication between marine electronic devices such as depth finders, nautical chart plotters, navigation instruments, engines, tank level sensors and GPS receivers. Parameters of this certification are defined and controlled by the U.S.-based National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA). This accreditation signifies that a product has been tested to meet specific critical safety criteria and to correctly implement network management and messaging. In meeting this certification, the Honda BF250 does not require the added expense of proprietary gateway devices; the certification also correlates with enhanced safety as the new BF250 engine is equipped with engine oil pressure and overheat information alerts.

The design of the Honda BF250 incorporates a spark plug maintenance cover which assists in ease-of-maintenance of the spark plug. This window provides access to the spark plugs without removing the entire engine cover. The engine also includes a high-quality, cost-effective nickel spark plug that seals the combustion chamber.

Because the BF250 engine mounts on industry-standard 26" centers, repowering twin BF250s is convenient. Having a 26" industry-standard engine mount is an advantage in several ways. In terms of repowering, older boats traditionally utilized the standard 26" distance, making it an easy fit to repower with Honda engines that utilize the same standard. By extension, having to modify a transom to accommodate a different distance is costly. Having ample room between the two outboards allows for easier access for maintenance, and this distance provides tighter turning capability.

The technologically advanced Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in the Honda BF250 can predict the operator's shifting operation based on changes in engine speed and throttle position. In order to reduce the shifting load, the ECU actually controls the ignition timing to modify torque when the operator shifts from partial to neutral. The below diagram illustrates the benefit of this shifting load reduction control.

Describe how the design of the Honda BF250 engine results in increased durability and reliability.

The increased durability and reliability of the Honda BF250 stems from a redesigned gear case and a low gear ratio; an optional large diameter (16") propeller also can further enhance performance. The gear wheel diameter of the new BF250 engine is 10 percent larger than the Honda BF225 engine. In addition, the gear wheel's tooth tip is 38 percent thicker and the face pressure is reduced by nine percent. All of these enhancements contribute to the model's higher power output. The gear wheel material of the BF250 also is more durable, resulting from the removal of impurities from the nickel-chrome-molybdenum steel.

The gear case of the BF250 engine incorporates an advanced design that minimizes water resistance, and by extension, reduces the overall drag coefficient by five percent (without the use of a larger, optional propeller).

An improved gear tooth machining process that strengthens the surface and ultimately reduces the misalignment of the gear teeth contributes to increased durability and reliability for the Honda BF250.

The gear shaft construction of the new Honda BF250 is enhanced to incorporate a needle bearing support configuration for the forward-gear journal. This improved construction reduces tilting of the forward gear, thereby reducing the misalignment of the gears for higher power output.

The new Honda Marine BF250 outboard engine boasts the best fuel economy level in its class. Discuss how second generation lean burn control contributes to increased fuel efficiency.

Lean Burn Control (incorporated in Honda marine engine models BF40, BF50, BF60, BF75, BF90, BF135, BF150, BF200, BF225, and BF250) automatically adjusts the air/fuel mix according to speed and load while maximizing power throughout the acceleration range - providing as much as 20 percent greater fuel economy in cruise mode (2,000 to 4,500 rpm). Concerning the new BF250 engine, this feature has been enhanced to improve fuel efficiency even further in specific cruising ranges, resulting in best-in-class fuel economy - 16 -30 percent better than competitive models, depending on specific running conditions. As the below diagram depicts, the lean burn control system accurately measures and monitors the fuel delivered to the engine's combustion chamber (under various loads and throughout the power band) and determines what the optimal air/fuel ratio should be for best fuel economy. Further, to burn the exact amount of one gallon of gasoline, approximately 14.7 gallons of air is required. The air/fuel ratio control is performed by the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), based on the feedback from the O2 sensor, allowing more accurate control in the lean-burn range.

The superior performance, power, and reliability of the new Honda Marine BF250 engine are the result of several exclusive technological features. The Honda BF250 is a high-performance 3.6 L VTEC® (see below discussion) engine that incorporates technological advancements from both Honda's automotive and marine outboard engine lines. For example, when designing the BF250, Honda engineers increased the stroke of the existing Honda Odyssey car engine - expanding its displacement to 3.6 L. The result is a new outboard model with excellent performance, improved fuel economy, more power, and increased reliability.

Integrated into the BF250 design is Honda's Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control® (VTEC®). First debuted in the high-performance Acura NSX sports car, VTEC® technology also is featured in the designs of the Honda Marine BF225, BF150 and BF90 engines, providing all of these models with a unique blend of power, torque, and efficiency at any speed. VTEC® works to vary the lift and duration of the intake valve opening to deliver optimal performance at both low and high rpm, resulting in peak performance at all speeds. The technology provides a broad, flat torque curve and smooth power delivery throughout the engine's entire operating range, allowing the operator to enjoy both outstanding performance and impressive fuel economy.

The Honda BF250 engine incorporates the Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST™) System which dramatically improves holeshot acceleration by advancing ignition spark timing to within one degree of the knock limit during 'hammer down' acceleration. The Engine Control Module (ECM) then steps in to increase injector timing, creating a more potent air/fuel mixture. The styling concept of the new Honda BF250, a departure from previously introduced Honda Marine outboards, incorporates a sleeker and slimmer aesthetic design. The cowling of the new engine exhibits a sharper, more angular profile - with chrome lines conveying power and speed - contributing to an overall streamlined, aerodynamic appearance. Included in this innovative and durable configuration are technologically advanced features that contribute to the engine's best-in-class fuel economy and excellent power and charging performance.

Improved Power, Performance and Fuel Economy

With a full-throttle RPM range of 5300-6300, the Honda BF250 is a high-performance 3.6 L engine that incorporates an all-new gear case and advancements from Honda's automotive and marine outboard engine lines. For example, integrated into the BF250 design is Honda's Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control® (VTEC®). First debuted in the high-performance Acura NSX sports car, VTEC® technology works to vary the lift and duration of the intake valve opening to deliver optimal performance at both low and high rpm, resulting in peak performance at all speeds. The technology provides a broad, flat torque curve and smooth power delivery throughout the engine's entire operating range, allowing the operator to enjoy outstanding performance and impressive fuel economy.

The Honda BF250 engine incorporates the Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST™) System which dramatically improves holeshot acceleration by advancing ignition spark timing to within one degree of the knock limit during ‘hammer down' acceleration. The Engine Control Module (ECM) then steps in to increase injector timing, creating a more potent air/fuel mixture. The resulting boost in available torque at low rpm contributes to a strong holeshot (off the line acceleration) to get the boat up on plane quickly. The ignition spark timing is appropriately adjusted under slower throttle advancement, ensuring a leaner air/fuel mix and improved fuel efficiency. The ECM in the Honda BF250 also can predict the operator's shifting operation based on changes in engine speed and throttle position.

Further, when the electric load on the new Honda BF250 increases, an adjustable idling-charge system enhances the charging performance of the engine. The BF250 has an industry-first, AMP Plus (Amp+) feature which, at idle speeds, senses a need for more amperage and automatically raises the engine rpms by 100 to produce an additional nine amps. This is perfect for simultaneously running accessories such as SONAR, GPS, stereo, live wells and trolling motors.

The all-new Honda BF250 is designed with Lean Burn Control, a feature that automatically adjusts the air/fuel mix according to speed and load while maximizing power throughout the acceleration range - providing as much as 20 percent greater fuel economy in cruise mode (2,000 to 4,500 rpm). Lean Burn Control has been enhanced on the BF250 to improve fuel efficiency even further in specific cruising ranges, resulting in best-in-class fuel economy: 16 -30 percent better than competitive models, depending on specific running conditions.

The increased durability and reliability of the Honda BF250 stems from a redesigned gear case and a low gear ratio; an optional large diameter (16") propeller also can further enhance performance. The gear case of the BF250 engine incorporates an advanced design that minimizes water resistance, and by extension, reduces the overall drag coefficient by five percent (even without the use of the larger, optional propeller).

The design of the Honda BF250 incorporates a spark plug maintenance cover that assists in ease-of-maintenance of the spark plug. This window provides access to the spark plugs without removing the entire engine cover. The engine also includes a high-quality, cost-effective nickel spark plug that seals the combustion chamber.

In addition, the new Honda BF250 engine is NMEA 2000® certified (parameters of this certification are defined and controlled by the U.S.-based National Marine Electronics Association). This accreditation means that the product has been tested to meet specific critical safety criteria and to correctly implement network management and messaging. NMEA developed this open architecture electronic protocol to allow engine data to be interfaced with a wide variety of name brand marine electronics. In meeting this certification, the BF250 does not require the added expense of proprietary gateway devices.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) has named Honda Marine as recipient of the prestigious 2011 Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Award for Excellence in Customer Satisfaction for outboard engines. This marks the eighth consecutive year that NMMA has honored Honda Marine with the recognition.

The NMMA will present the 2011 awards at the International Boat Builder's Exhibition (IBEX) show and conference, scheduled for October 17-19 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

The CSI Award acknowledges companies that actively measure customer satisfaction to pursue continuous improvement. Recipients have achieved and maintained an independently measured standard of 90 percent or higher in customer satisfaction during the past year, based on customer surveys. The award is based on owners' rating for overall satisfaction with their outboard engines. Honda Marine outboard engines are known for their superior performance, high fuel efficiency, excellent reliability and quietness-at-cruise – all criteria important to consumer satisfaction.

Honda Marine announced today that it will be adding an all-new flagship outboard engine model to its reliable and fuel efficient lineup. Debuting at the 2011 Miami International Boat Show, the concept BF250 engine provides the first indication of the design direction for the all-new 250 horsepower (hp) outboard, which will be available to boaters in late 2011.

The concept BF250 engine is based upon a unique 3.6 liter engine platform designed to deliver best-in-class fuel economy and outstanding performance for customers looking for more power with Honda reliability and quality. Along with that performance is a striking, sophisticated and elegant new exterior design that will be revealed when the production model BF250 engine is offered for sale later this year. The engine will incorporate a host of Honda exclusive features, including BLAST™, VTEC®, and Lean Burn Control to maximize the consumer's experience. The model also will carry National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) 2000® certification.

Specifically, Honda Marine was recognized by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for their technical training module in the area of repair of outboard engine power trim and tilt assemblies.

Honda produced its unique online service training solution in conjunction with Irvine, California-based Pacific Technology Solutions (PTS). The training is used in Honda Marine dealership facilities nationwide.

Administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, the MarCom Awards program recognizes outstanding creative achievement by industry professionals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence, and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. Honda Marine announced today on-sale and pricing information for its redesigned BF115 outboard engine. Starting at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $12,818, the improved BF115 EFI, with significant new improvements, will incorporate a host of Honda-exclusive technologies that provide increased value and benefit to consumers. Honda Marine dealers will offer BF115 engines for sale beginning the first week of July.

The new BF115, available in both 20- and 25-inch shaft models, allows boaters excellent fuel efficiency, low emissions and quiet operation via Honda's legendary four-stroke outboard engine technology.

Legendary Honda Performance

The BF115 is derived from the inline 4-cylinder 2.4 liter DOHC engine platform used in Honda's award-winning and popular Accord automobile - the largest displacement engine in its class. As a result of the outstanding performance of this engine, coupled with the advanced technologies it incorporates, the BF115 is able to produce class-leading performance with outstanding fuel efficiency and reliability.

For example, holeshot and acceleration are dramatically improved via the use of Honda Marine's exclusive BLAST™ system, which advances ignition spark timing to within one degree of the knock limit during 'hammer down' acceleration. At that point, the Engine Control Module (ECM) steps in to increase injector timing, creating a more potent air/fuel mixture. In fact, the ECM receives constant input from 18 different sensors to deliver instant starts, smooth operation, strong performance and excellent fuel efficiency. Specifically, the BF115 reduces fuel consumption by 19 percent over the previous model, per Honda R&D internal testing data.

The resulting boost in available torque at low rpm contributes to a strong holeshot to get the boat up on plane quickly. The ignition spark timing is appropriately adjusted under slower throttle advancement, resulting in a leaner air/fuel mix and class-leading fuel efficiency.

Spotlight on the BF115 Features

The in-line 4-cylinder BF115 outboard engine features a powerful and compact Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) design that creates more valve lift to pull in more air for increased horsepower. In addition, a Multi-Port Electronic Fuel Injection system (PGM-FI) accurately controls ignition timing and fuel flow during start-up to provide instant throttle response regardless of weather conditions. The system also helps improve overall fuel efficiency by maintaining an optimal air/fuel mixture across the rpm range.

Further contributing to the engine's outstanding fuel efficiency is Honda's exclusive Lean Burn Control, which pairs the ECU with a linear air/fuel sensor to adjust the air/fuel mixture according to speed and load, maximizing efficiency in cruise mode.

For smooth engine operation, twin counter balancing shafts have been integrated into the new BF115. This addition provides ultra low vibration operation throughout the entire RPM range.

The engine's 55-amp alternator (40 amps of battery charging) ignition and other critical electrical components are mounted near the top of the powerhead to ensure that all are kept cool and dry. By extension, a camshaft-driven, automotive-style oil pump ensures long-term durability of critical engine components.

The BF115 utilizes an Engine Alert System that monitors vital engine functions and helps in preventing engine damage by alerting the operator of overheating, low oil PSI, over-rev, water in fuel, battery condition and other critical engine functions.

Honda's exclusive double-sealed and multi-layered 4-Front™ Corrosion Protection (paint) System has been incorporated into the design of the BF115, as well as several other features designed to minimize damage caused by the harsh marine environment. Specifically, painted interior cooling passages have been added to the engine's design for long-term durability.

For anglers, a dealer-installed option is available to allow for push button variable speed control. With a simple push up or down of a button, customers can control their speed in increments of 50 RPM from 650 RPM to 900 RPM.

Ease of Maintenance

In addition to improved fuel efficiency and performance characteristics, the BF115 incorporates a number of features designed to facilitate maintenance. An automotive-type oil filter and color-coded oil fill and dipstick simplify fluid level checks and changes. The low-maintenance design of the DOHC engine allows for easy adjustment of the rocker arms, preventing the need for multiple shims or trial-and-error adjusting - also making the design compatible with Honda's HDS portable diagnostic system to facilitate on-water service.

All new Honda outboard engines sold for recreational use offer an industry-best True 5-year, non-declining limited factory warranty that is the same on the last day as it is on the first.

Important to most boaters, the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) on the new BF115 outputs signals that are compliant with National Marine Electronic Association (NMEA) 2000 standards. This design enhancement allows engine management information such as engine rpm, fuel consumption, cruising distance and alerts to be displayed on a variety of NMEA 2000-compatible onboard electronic display devices, such as sonar and GPS.

Corporate Leadership

Honda recognizes that the preservation of natural resources is not only a corporate responsibility but also an important company fundamental. Reducing the burden on the environment at every stage in a product's life cycle - from research and development through manufacture, sale, usage, and disposal - is at the core of Honda's corporate culture and philosophy.

Beyond its desire to develop cleaner products, Honda also seeks to reduce the environmental impact of all of its activities. Launched in 1998, Honda's Green Factory planning concept is the foundation of the company's environmentally forward-thinking manufacturing practices, which seek to minimize factory emissions and waste throughout the manufacturing process. Environmental Technology Milestones

Developing cleaner products is not a new mandate for Honda. Coupled with world-class quality and technology, Honda has routinely incorporated environmentally-focused features into its products for more than 40 years. A few examples include:

Since 1964 Honda has manufactured only four-stroke outboard motors. Cleaner, more fuel-efficient and quieter than traditional two-stroke outboards, four-stroke motors also do not release oil directly into the water;
In 1972 Honda introduced the Controlled Vortex Combustion Chamber (CVCC) engine. The CVCC was the first automobile engine capable of meeting the 1970 Clean Air Act without the weight, cost, and complexity of a catalytic converter;
In 1997 Honda entered the handheld power-equipment market with a noticeably quiet and fuel-efficient trimmer/brush cutter powered by the world's first 360-degree inclinable mini-four-stroke engine;
In 1998 Honda became the first company to introduce an entire line of high-performance outboard motors that met the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) year 2006 emission standards;
In 2000 Honda became the first auto company to receive the EPA's Climate Protection Award for development of the Honda Insight, the first gas-electric hybrid vehicle sold in the United States;
In 2002 Honda became the first automaker in the world to market a fuel cell vehicle certified by the U.S. EPA and the state of California. The 2005 Honda FCX also features its own fuel cell stack capable of cold weather operation;
In 2003 Honda introduced the HRX lawnmower, the first to enable simultaneous distribution of grass clippings to both the bag and the ground with no additional equipment. Whether the user chooses to mulch, compost or dispose of the bagged clippings, all of the options provided by the HRX are better for the environment than conventional clipping disposal.
In 2007 Honda introduces the first Micro-Combined Heat and Power device (MCHP) in the United States. First introduced in Japan in 2003, the MCHP is a breakthrough technology for providing home heat and power.

Honda Marine: Honda Marine Debuts New 115-Horsepower Outboard: BF115 to Feature Honda-Exclusive Technologies

Honda Marine announced today that it will improve upon its award-winning lineup of fuel-injected four-stroke outboard engines with the new BF115. Introduced at the 2010 Miami International Boat Show, the 115-horsepower (hp) outboard will be available to boaters this summer.

The BF115 is derived from the inline 4-cylinder 2.4 liter DOHC engine platform used in Honda's award-winning and popular Accord automobile. Due to this outstanding engine coupled with other advanced technologies, the BF115 is able to produce class-leading performance with unparalleled fuel efficiency and reliability. In addition, the new BF115 will feature design cues similar to its recent predecessors, the BF40 and BF50, BF75 and BF90 and 105 Jet, including the wing-form design of the cowling, a performance-oriented gear case, and a host of Honda-exclusive innovations.

In 2006, the company introduced its redesigned and best-in-class BF75 and BF90 EFI, and continued to build on its success in 2008 with the introduction of the 105 Jet, as well as the fuel-injected BF40 and BF50. Honda unveiled its new BF60, with many of the performance and efficiency hallmarks of the Honda 75 and 90 horsepower siblings, at last year's Miami Boat Show.

The new BF115 delivers the fuel efficiency and quiet operation of Honda's legendary four-stroke outboard engine technology combined with light weight and powerful acceleration. Honda's exclusive Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) system and a high-performance gear case combine for a strong hole shot, while Lean Burn Control provides best-in-class fuel efficiency at cruise. Specifically, the BF115 reduces fuel consumption by 20 percent over the previous model.

The new BF115 is lighter than its predecessor. A lightweight engine cover and a highly rigid air intake manifold mated with a chain driven camshaft help to reduce total engine weight.

The BF115 also features Honda's all-new high-performance gear case. A longer anti-ventilation plate helps trap water flowing to the propeller to minimize cavitation, while a streamlined front and enlarged bullet reduce drag for enhanced acceleration and fuel efficiency.

A front-splash plate reduces spray from the hull bottom, helping to maintain a dry deck above. Important to most boaters, the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) on the new BF115 outputs signals that are compliant with NEMA 2000 standards. This design enhancement allows engine management information such as engine rpm, fuel consumption, cruising distance and alerts to be displayed on a variety of NMEA 2000-compatible onboard electronic display devices that are increasingly common and popular with customers.

Honda's Power Equipment Division has received a MarCom Platinum Award for its computer-based dealer service training programs. Specifically, Honda Power Equipment and Honda Marine, both business units of Honda's Power Equipment Division, were recognized by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for their technical training in the areas of service management, carburetors and technical updates.

Honda produced its unique online sales and service training solution in conjunction with Irvine, California-based Pacific Technology Solutions (PTS). The training is used in Honda Power Equipment and Honda Marine dealership facilities nationwide.

Honda Marine also received an honorable mention award for its online dealership sales training program, designed to allow dealer sales personnel to complete their product feature/benefit training in remote locations and at any time.

Administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, the MarCom Awards program recognizes outstanding creative achievement by industry professionals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence, and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. Winners are selected from more than 200 categories in seven forms of media and communication efforts, including: marketing; publications; promotions; public service/pro bono; creativity; and electronic/interactive.

Flagships of the Honda Marine Lineup
The BF200 and BF225's 3.5-liter, single overhead camshaft (SOHC), V-6 engine provides fresh- and saltwater anglers with the most technologically-advanced outboard power available. Based on the architecture of the incomparable Honda Pilot, Ridgeline, and Odyssey automotive engines, the models deliver the maximum in durability, reliability and world-class performance as well as superior torque in a narrow, balanced 60-degree "V" profile. The slim design of both engines allows for the mounting of dual engines on a 26-inch center-to-center distance, perfect for repower applications.

Derived from racing and first appearing on the Acura NSX sports car, Honda's exclusive Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC™ - BF225) system utilizes mild cam lobes to operate the intake valves at low rpm, and then engages a high-output lobe for high-rpm operation. The resulting boost in available power provides outstanding mid-range acceleration and top-end performance.

Honda's exclusive Lean Burn Control automatically adjusts the engine's air/fuel mix according to speed and load for maximum fuel efficiency in cruise mode. Additionally, a top-mounted oxygen (O₂) sensor partners with the engine command system to deliver maximum fuel economy under any conditions.

Added to the BF200 and BF225 in 2009, Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) dramatically improves holeshot and acceleration by advancing ignition spark timing to within one degree of the knock limit during "hammer down" acceleration. The Engine Control Module (ECM) then steps in to increase injector timing, creating a more potent air/fuel mixture. The resulting boost in available torque at low rpm contributes to a strong holeshot to get the boat up on plane quickly. The ignition spark timing is appropriately adjusted under slower throttle advancement, ensuring a leaner air/fuel mix and class-leading fuel efficiency.

The BF200 and BF225 also feature Honda's all-new high-performance gear case. On both models, an Engine Alert System monitors vital engine functions and alerts the operator of issues, while a 2-Pass Cooling System maintains an even temperature across all cylinders for increased cooling efficiency and long-term durability. Both also incorporate a tuned dual exhaust that wraps around the outside of the oil pan to reduce heat build-up and improve engine efficiency and performance. Multi-Port Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) delivers precise amounts of air and fuel to each cylinder for quick starts, instant throttle response and low fuel consumption. Additionally, a crankshaft-driven, automotive-style oil pump promotes long-term durability of critical engine components. A Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) design eliminates trial-and-error valve adjustment. The BF200 and BF225 also meet NMEA 2000 standards, providing users full compatibility with a host of electronic devices.

An exclusive Dual Stage Induction System uses a plenum chamber with twin butterfly valves for low-speed drivability and high-speed performance. At low speeds, air passes through a long intake runner for increased low-end torque. At engine speeds greater than 3,500 rpm, shutter valves open to shorten the air's path and boost air flow for increased available horsepower. While other four-stroke engines use long intake manifolds to deliver air to the cylinder head, Honda's innovative design maximizes combustion efficiency.

The engines' single cowling latch ensures a water-tight seal, while Honda's patented 4-Front Corrosion Protection System and stainless steel steering arms, tilt tubes, and shafts fight off corrosion caused by harsh marine environments. A freshwater flushport serves to remove debris and salt water from the engine for extended life, and a Built-In Pitot Tube in the gear case eliminates the need to drill holes in the boat for installation.

The BF200 and BF225 are also among the industry's quietest outboards, eliminating the need for sound-dampening insulation into the cowling designs.
The BF225 is available in 20-, 25- and 30-inch shaft models, while the BF200 is offered in 20-inch and 25-inch shaft lengths. All new Honda outboard engines sold for recreational use offer an industry-best True 5-year, non-declining limited factory warranty that is the same on the last day as it is on the first.

Based on the same reliable automotive engine that powers the Honda Accord, CR-V, and Element, the BF135 and BF150 are designed for efficiency and reliability. The pair offers a unique set of features designed to provide exceptional power and reliability with less noise than other engines in their class. Honda BF150
The 2.4L, in-line 4-cylinder BF150 boasts Honda's exclusive Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC™); Lean Burn Control and Three Way Cooling Systems; Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC) and the exclusive Dual Stage Induction System.

Derived from racing and first appearing on the Acura NSX sports car, VTEC™ utilizes mild cam lobes to operate the intake valves at low rpm, and then engages a high-output lobe for high-rpm operation. The resulting boost in available power provides outstanding mid-range acceleration.

Honda Marine's BF75 and BF90 afford boaters the fuel efficiency and quiet operation of Honda's legendary technology combined with the light weight and explosive acceleration traditionally associated with two-stroke outboards. The pair's 1.5-liter, in-line 4-cylinder engine boasts Honda's exclusive Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) system, Variable Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control (VTEC™ - BF90), Lean Burn Control, and Three Way Cooling.

BLAST Off
Ideal for pontoons, aluminum bass and walleye boats, small center consoles, skiffs, and inflatables, Honda's BF75 and BF90 EFI redefine four-stroke performance with the patented BLAST system.

Holeshot and acceleration are dramatically improved by advancing ignition spark timing to within one degree of the knock limit during "hammer down" acceleration. The Engine Control Module (ECM) then steps in to increase injector timing, creating a more potent air/fuel mixture. The resulting boost in available torque at low rpm contributes to a strong holeshot to get the boat up on plane quickly. The ignition spark timing is appropriately adjusted under slower throttle advancement, ensuring a leaner air/fuel mix and class-leading fuel efficiency.

Further contributing to the engines' outstanding fuel efficiency is Honda's exclusive Lean Burn Control, which pairs the ECU with an oxygen (O2) sensor to adjust the air/fuel mixture according to speed and load, maximizing efficiency in "cruise mode."

Derived from racing and first appearing on the Acura NSX sports car, VTEC™ (BF90) utilizes mild cam lobes to operate the intake valves at low rpm, and then engages a high-output lobe for high-rpm operation. The resulting boost in available power provides outstanding mid-range acceleration.

Further contributing to the pair's explosive performance is Honda's all-new high-performance gear case. A longer anti-ventilation plate helps trap water flowing to the propeller to minimize porpoising, while a streamlined front and longer bullet reduce drag for enhanced acceleration and fuel efficiency. A front splash plate reduces spray from the hull bottom, maintaining a dry deck above, and a 2.33:1 gear ratio affords the use of 13- to 14-inch diameter propellers for heavier loads.

The engines' best-in-class 44-amp alternator (35 amps of battery charging), ignition, and other critical electrical components are mounted near the top of the powerhead to ensure that all are kept cool and dry.

High Performance in a Durable Package
To ensure long term durability, Honda engineers designed the first individually-controlled cylinder cooling system for outboard engines - Three Way Cooling. The system reduces engine heat by allowing the cylinder head to run slightly cooler than the cylinder block, greatly reducing engine wear.

A Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) design uses dual intake valves to deliver the optimal air/fuel mixture for maximum torque and combustion efficiency. In addition, a Multi-Port, Programmed Electronic Fuel Injection system (PGM-FI) accurately controls ignition timing during start-up to provide instant throttle response and outstanding fuel efficiency.

Top-mounted electronics are a standard feature on both engines. The alternator, ignition, and other critical components are mounted near the top of the powerhead to ensure that all are kept cool and dry. By extension, a camshaft-driven, automotive-style oil pump promotes long-term durability of critical engine components.

The BF75 and BF90 boast an Engine Alert System that uses audio and visual cues, as well as rpm reduction circuits to alert the operator of conditions which can contribute to engine damage, such as overheating, low oil pressure, and over-revving. A freshwater flushport functions to flush debris and salt water out of the engine, while Honda's patented 4-Front Corrosion Protection System features a double-sealed, multi-layered paint process - both features extend the life of the outboards in harsh marine environments.

The BF90 is available in both 20- and 25-inch shaft models, while the BF75 is offered in a 20-inch shaft length. All new Honda outboard engines sold for recreational use offer an industry-best True 5-year, non-declining limited factory warranty that is the same on the last day as it is on the first.
