Honda Marine Features, Benefits, and Exclusives
This comprehensive summary of features, benefits, and design enhancements, as well as Honda exclusives for all Honda Marine outboard engines, is designed to illustrate Honda's commitment to technological, operational, and environmental excellence for its customers.
Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) System holeshot and acceleration are dramatically improved by advancing ignition spark timing to within one degree of the knock limit during ‘hammer down’ acceleration. The Engine Control Module (ECM) then steps in to increase injector timing, creating a more potent air/fuel mixture. The resulting boost in available torque at low rpm contributes to a strong holeshot to get the boat up on plane quickly. The ignition spark timing is appropriately adjusted under slower throttle advancement, ensuring a leaner air/fuel mix and class-leading fuel efficiency. (BF40, BF50, BF60, BF75, BF90, BF115, BF135, BF150, BF200, BF225, BF250)
Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC™), a Honda exclusive, utilizes mild cam lobes to operate intake valves at low rpm, then engages a high-output lobe for higher-rpm operation. The exclusive design provides a unique blend of power, torque, and efficiency at any speed. (BF90, BF150, BF225, BF250)
Lean Burn Control automatically adjusts the air/fuel mix according to speed and load while maximizing power throughout the acceleration range – providing as much as 20 percent greater fuel economy in cruise mode (2,000 to 4,500 rpm). (BF40, BF50, BF60, BF75, BF90, BF115, BF135, BF150, BF200, BF225, BF250)
3-Way Cooling System reduces engine heat by allowing the cylinder head to run slightly cooler than the cylinder block, greatly reducing engine wear. (BF75, BF90, BF135, BF150)
4-Front Corrosion Protection System, a patented double-sealed, multi-layer paint process, fights off corrosion from harsh marine environments. The base is a corrosion-resistant Honda aluminum alloy, followed by a double-sealed treatment, an epoxy primer undercoat, and an acrylic resin metallic coating, finished with a clear overcoat of acrylic.
(BF2 – BF225)
Engine Command System constantly accepts input from 18 different sensors to deliver clean starts, smooth operation, strong performance and excellent fuel efficiency.
(BF40, BF50, BF60, BF75, BF90, BF135, BF150, BF200, BF225)
Reverse Exhaust Relief adds an exhaust outlet above the anti-ventilation plate, allowing the prop to run in clean, exhaust-free water and producing additional reverse thrust. (BFP8, BFP9.9, BF/BFP15, BF/BFP20)
Industry-Best True 5-Year Warranty; Honda Marine offers an industry-best 5-year, non-declining, limited factory-backed warranty. The program offers true Honda factory backing in comparison to the outsourced, extended service contracts offered by many other manufacturers. Standard on all Honda engines purchased for recreational use, coverage for the True 5 limited warranty is the same on the last day as it is on the first.
J.D. Power Award Recipient; Honda Marine’s EFI (electronic fuel injection) outboard engines ranked ‘Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Four-Stroke Outboard Engines’ in the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Marine Engine Competitive Information Studysm. Honda also received the award in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
NMMA CSI Award Recipient, 2004-2011; Honda Marine has received the NMMA CSI Award for Excellence in Customer Satisfaction for the past eight years. Honda outboards were recognized for their performance, fuel-efficiency, reliability and quietness-at-cruise – evaluating criteria important to consumers.
Full Line of 50-State Engines: Honda Marine’s full line of current production models meets rigorous California Air Resources Board (CARB) 3-Star standards, ensuring their availability and regulatory compliance in all 50 states.
2-Pass Cooling System maintains an even temperature in all cylinders for increased cooling efficiency and long-term durability.
Sealed Starter Motor, inverted into a sealed chamber, protects the starter Bendix drive from the elements. (BF75, BF90, BF135, BF150, BF200, BF225)
Multi-Port Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) delivers precise amounts of fuel and air to each cylinder, resulting in quick starts, instant throttle response and low fuel consumption. PGM-FI employs microprocessor technology to accurately control ignition timing during start-up and across the entire rpm range, providing optimum overall operation.
(BF40, BF50, BF60, BF75, BF90, BF135, BF150, BF200, BF225)
Engine Alert System monitors vital engine functions and alerts the operator of issues with a light, buzzer and/or rpm reduction. (BF8 – BF225)
Stainless Steel Steering Arms, Tilt Tubes, and Shafts are made of marine-grade stainless steel for maximum durability. All engine fasteners and hardware are either stainless steel or a specially treated Dacro material to create a barrier between dissimilar metals for enhanced corrosion protection.
Steering Friction Adjustment allows for easy adjustment of steering tension, providing enhanced maneuverability in tiller models.
Pendulum Mount System, an exclusive triangular rubber mount system, absorbs vibration and provides extremely smooth operation. (BF/BFP8,BF/BFP9.9, BF/BFP15, BF/BFP20)
Gas Assist Tilt allows for easy tilting while running in shallow water. (BF25, BF30)
PGM Ignition uses a microprocessor to accurately control ignition timing during start-up and across the entire rpm range, providing optimum overall operation.
(BF/BFP8,BF/BFP9.9, BF/BFP15, BF/BFP20, BF25, BF30)
Power Thrust Design combines a low gear ratio with a four-blade Power Thrust propeller, producing more thrust in forward and reverse. (BFP8, BFP9.9, BFP15, BFP20)
Integral Fuel Tank enhances portability as one unit. The vent may be closed for transport or extended storage periods. (BF2)
Centrifugal Clutch maintains a smooth idle until the throttle is advanced above idle speed, automatically engaging the propeller. (BF2)
